But the one thing that Derrick realized at a very young age was the ability to communicate and express himself through drawing and writing. The amoun ...t of projects began to increase: instructors, students, and his family began to take notice, undoubtedly he found his destiny. Senior year in high school Derrick attended the Media Productions class at the William D. Ford Vocational and Technical Center where John Prusak the assistant director of Michael Moore’s “Roger and Me” taught. Top honors and perfect attendance Derrick was encouraged to further educate himself and to develop his skills as a film maker. In 2000, Derrick graduated from Schoolcraft Community College with Associates in Business, soon after in 2001; he attended Specs Howard School of Broadcast Arts for television production. Fresh out of school the first film that Derrick worked on was “The Ugly One” directed by Patrick Moug where he was credited as best boy. In 2003, Derrick wrote his first screen play “One Day, One Life” and six months later directed his first film. His second screenplay “The Warrior” gives a detailed encounter and description of his pain, due to cancer, that he had to come to terms with physically and mental well after going into remission. As well as, how the public reacted to him having the disease in the 80’s. In a difficult market like Detroit, he began to examine other avenues of the entertainment industry and promoted Dominic Dunne’s show on Court TV, worked with Spirit at Super Bowl 40 in Detroit Michigan, promoted rap shows for Writer/Director/Rapper Al Nuke, and worked with Radish Creative and Comcast on commercial spots. Moving to Los Angeles less than a year ago, Derrick has worked on numerous reality shows as a set production assistant, coordinator, and assistant director on location for shows like Gene Simmons Family Jewels, High School Musical, Paris Hilton’s BFF, Celebrity Rehab 2, and Celebrity Rehab Sober House. Future plans for Derrick consist of directing three shorts and two docs that he wrote, organizing a fundraiser for the Make-A-Wish Foundation, and writing impacting, compelling, and real screenplays, always learning and developing his craft.
