It is not uncommon for students to say and feel that they are comfortable with a concept, and then fail to perform on an evaluation. This is a factor of both study as well as teaching methods. Unfortunately, many educators focus on passively showing instead of actively teaching students how to solve problems. Unknowingly, they facilitate the impression of knowledge ..., rather than correcting it. With this year’s Ivy League acceptance rates at record lows, where Columbia, Harvard and Yale accepted 8% of their applicants, a deliberate approach to academic goals is imperative to being a competitive candidate. It is best to build the cognitive skills required to be a high-performance student at an earlier age when children are still developing these competencies. This will provide a foundation for the end of Middle School when students first take state-wide exams that become part of the High School transcript sent to colleges.
