You wanted to know if getting the yellow side was all luck or actualy skill.
It is skill. I've solved the cube so many times and I can get the yellow side in about 3 or 4 moves.
And When getting the yellow side and your getting a 'figure 8' all you have to do is preform the spinny move I think. Doing the other move is just to move around pieces, alot of getting the yellow is spinny.
Once you get really good though, you'll see all the patterns and just know how to get the yellow. It will become second nature.
