Biggest, Baddest, Bucket List - Livingston, Guatemala

Biggest, Baddest, Bucket List - Livingston, Guatemala

    by overlandertv (3/9/13) 11 views

meet the local travel guides - http://www.overlander.tv This is my entry for the biggest, baddest, bucket list entry. Exploring the Guatemalan Port City of Livingston. I meet up with Diana from Antojitos Los Tres Garifunas. The Garifuna's are one of five cultural groups in Livingston. They are the descendants of West African slaves shipwrecked on St Vincent, who interbred with the local Carib and Arawak people. When the British took over St Vincent from the French, they exiled the Garifuna. The Garifuna now populate the Belize, Guatemalan and Honduras Caribbean Coast. I speak with Diana about Guifitti, a medicinal alcoholic tonic made up of sixteen different herbal roots. It is believed to be a 'cure all'. I also show you the 'ghost hotel' I am staying in that is currently being renovated. As repairs are under way, I'm one of the few guests.

Crowdfunding Campaign Teaming Travel and Video

    by overlandertv (2/11/13) 0 views

Link to Crowd Funding Campaign - http://www.overlander.tv/crowdfunding/crowd-funding-campaign-teaming-travel-and-video/ I intend to raise $100,000 in one month through crowd funding . In return I will set up http://www.overlander.tv and http://www.2minprofile.com to benefit travelers, tourism business and video producers. "Over 10 years ago when I started dabbling in video, as a wedding video producer. I don't think I ever imagined that I could possibly find a way to travel the world making videos. But I have, and my experience on the road has taught me about the alchemic magic of travel and video. So I feel the need to give something back, and this is how *Im going to establish a video portal where travellers can learn about destinations and tourism business, and book holidays. *I want to team tourism operators with local video producers to promote travel destinations. *I want to provide a way by which video producers can get paid for their work, and as with me, make traveling the world, a career choice. *Videos will be produced according to a tried and tested formula. I think this is the key, letting everyone know what the outcome will be. I've done my research, I know what needs to be done. It's a big operation to take this global. Video has been found to be the best marketing tool for tourism http://www.thinkwithgoogle.com/insights/library/studies/the-role-of-video-2012-traveler/ And did you know there are really only four companies running travel booking websites online. http://voices.yahoo.com/the-truth-travel-websites-6099438.html?cat=16 We're gonna be the fifth! And we are going to do it right, where everyone benefits So help make this a reality by donating to our crowd funding campaign. Every one wins with this concept, travellers, tourism business and video producers. and you want to check out some of the incentives we have, video production for tourism business, training for video producers and the chance to join our travellers club and indulge in the nomadic lifestyle or join the master group who help shape our companies formation So let's make this happen, visit the link in the write up, and help raise the funds needed to marry travel and video." Video shot on Caye Caulker, Belize.

Eco Tourism and Plastic Waste 04:39

    Eco Tourism and Plastic Waste

    by overlandertv (1/30/13) 1 views

I visited the remotest fishing village I could find on the Mexico East Coast. First I hitchhiked to Punta Herrero, then I took a boat to the island lobster fishing settlement of Maria Elena. I'd like to claim I was the first tourist to ever visit, but I was in fact the third. Even in this remote location, situated within the Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve, one finds plenty of plastic waste washed up on the shore. It makes me question the whole use of the word 'eco-tourism' and what it should entail. Is it enough for a resort that uses the term 'eco' to only recycle waste? Or should they also try and curb the use of plastics? And what of large beverage manufacturers like Coca-Cola, technology has developed bio-degradable plastic, why are they not using them with their products? What do you think, should tourism business try and help in the reduction of plastic waste?

The Reality of Social Media 03:03

    The Reality of Social Media

    by overlandertv (1/22/13) 5 views

Watching the Adam Curtis BBC documentary "All Watched Over By Machines Of Loving Grace" changed my view of social media. "It is fashionable to suggest that cyberspace is some island of the blessed where people are free to indulge and express their individuality. This is not true. I have seen many people spill out their emotions, their guts online, and I did so myself until I began to see that I had commodified myself. Commodification means that you turn something into a product that has a money value. In the nineteenth century commodities were made in factories by workers who were mostly exploited… but I created my interior thoughts as commodities for the corporations that owned the sites that I was posting to, and that commodity was then sold on to other consumer entities as entertainment Cyberspace is a black hole. It absorbs energy and personality and then re-presents it as an emotional spectacle. It is done by businesses that commodify human interaction and emotion and we are getting lost in the spectacle…” Carmen Hermosillo "On social media you are performing to attract people – you are dancing emotionally, on a platform created by a large corporation. People's feelings bounce back and forth – happy Stakhanovites, ignoring and denying the system of power. It's like Stalin's socialist realism. Both Social Media and socialist realism are innocent expressions of the ideology of the time, which don't pull back and show the wider thing they are part of. We look back on socialist realism not as innocent but as a dramatic expression of power; it expresses the superiority of the state, which was the guiding belief at the time. I think sometime in the future people will look back at the millions and millions of descriptions of personal feelings on the internet and see them in similar ways. This is the driving belief of our time: that 'me' and what I feel minute by minute is the natural centre of the world. Far from revealing that this is an ideology – and that there are other ways of looking at human society – what social media does is reinforce the feeling that this is the natural way to be."
