A cultural pioneer, his groundbreaking vision has influenced music, fashion, television and film. Russell was the driving force who introduced the groundbreaking medium of hip hop culture to the world—discovering, producing and managing superstars such as Jay Z, Tupac Shakur, Run DMC, and The Beastie Boys with his partner, the legendary record producer, Rick Rubin. In 1984 they created the seminal Def Jam records, arguably the most important record label in modern history.
