BY ANDREW HOWARD ANCHOR ALISON ARCHER You're watching multisource entertainment news analysis from Newsy The summer movie season kicked off early this year with the release of Universal’s Fast Five. Fast Five is the fifth film in the Fast and Furious series and marks the tenth anniversary for the franchise that’s famous for cool cars and edge of your seat, high-speed races. The film is expected to shift the box-office into high gear after raking in a mammoth 33 million dollars on Friday alone. Josh Weinstein from The Wrap says this could be just what Hollywood needs right now... “A strong opening could mark the end of this ho-hum box office year for the industry in general and the beginning of better days...” And better days at the box office is just what Universal Pictures had in mind when it picked up Fast Five for distribution. President of domestic distribution for the company tells the LA Times... “My deepest hope is that this is the first movie in a summer that can turn around all the negativity that’s been out there about the box office.” But some are surprised by the franchise’s staying power. Tim Appelo from the Hollywood Reporter says... “Wait a minute! The fifth movie in an action franchise is supposed to be less popular than the rest -- but Fast Five is the year's biggest hit so far.” According to Alt Film Guide- Fast Five proves that Hollywood’s business strategy of churning out sequels- really works. “The success of Fast Five is the very reason for that business strategy: Audiences the world over flock to see the same crap over and over again.” And if the box-office numbers don’t say enough about the success of Fast Five- check out some of the rave reviews from the audience. GRACE RANDOLPH: "Does this franchise get better and better or worse and worse?" FAN #1: "No it gets better and better." FAN #2: "Definitely better. The movie is unbelievable." FAN #3: "Way Better." FAN #4: "Honestly, it gets better and better." 'Like' Newsy on Facebook for updates in your newsfeed. Get more multisource video news analysis from Newsy. Transcript by Newsy

BY BRICE SANDER ANCHOR ALEX ROZIER You're watching multisource entertainment news analysis from Newsy She’s got looks. She’s got talent. She’s an Oscar nominee. And she’s going to play Katniss Everdeen? In a surprise move, studio execs tapped Winter’s Bone star Jennifer Lawrence to headline the film adaptation of Suzanne Collin’s megahit book trilogy, The Hunger Games. (TV Guide) As soon as Lawrence landed the role, fan feedback flooded the blogosphere. Some people weren’t too excited to see a 20-something blonde bombshell land the role of a ballsy brunette- but a writer for MTV reminds us of a casting controversy that surrounded another film franchise. “And, as many [Young Adult] enthusiasts may recall, fans were initially hesitant to accept Robert Pattinson in the role of ‘Twilight’ leading man Edward Cullen, and now Twilighters can't imagine anyone else as their vampire hero.” So now that Lawrence is locked in, who’s joining her on screen? The rumor is Weeds star Hunter Parrish, Beastly’s Alex Pettyfer and The Kids are All Right’s Josh Hutcherson are duking it out to land the male lead. ClevverTV argues, if fans aren’t too crazy about Lawrence playing Katniss, Parrish could be the perfect consolation prize. “Now fans of The Hunger Games Trilogy have been very open on Twitter about wanting Hunter in the role. This support seems to be very flattering for the Weeds star, who told E! he feels honored to just sort of be thought of. And legit fans will love this, too- he has indeed read all of the books himself, so he’s ready to go.” And Indy Mogul’s Grace Randolph points out the studio might want to steer clear of Pettyfer after his flick “I Am Number Four” bombed at the box office. “But how can Lionsgate be so sure that The Hunger Games will succeed where I Am Number Four did not? Already there are red flags. First, while Collins is adapting her own novels, for the screen, Gary Ross has been chosen to direct. Ross is a famous screenwriter who’s only directed two movies – Pleasantville and Seabiscuit. It’s never a good sign when Hollywood decides to let a favorite son cut his teeth on a big project, instead of getting someone with actual genre experience.” But E! Online asks, who cares about the cast or the director? “We’re talking about children fighting to the death in giant outdoor cage matches, while simultaneously struggling with love triangles and genetically engineered predators. Really. What’s not to love?” Filming begins this summer, but you’ll have to wait until March 2012 to see The Hunger Games hit the big screen.
