As she did for Napoleon's wife (The Many Lives & Secret Sorrows of Josephine B.), Gulland skillfully blends fact and fiction to imagine the life of Louise de la Vallière (1644–1710), mistress to Louis XIV, France's Sun King. Louise loses her father early and spends her childhood in a convent run by her aunt, Sister Angelique. When Louise's mother, Françoise, marries a marquis, she takes Louise home, where, by chance, she meets King Louis. As she secures a position at court about 100 pages in, the plot finally begins to bubble with intrigue: the king has married for political reasons, but, as a young and pious man, he has not kept a mistress before Louise. Their secret love eventually comes to light, but not without exacting a price. A supernatural element threaded throughout adds color to Gulland's vivid period imaginings.

Q: Dont you feel bad when you eat cute animals? A: Very. Q: If you had a third arm, what would you do with it? A: Well, I would grab more food and then eat much more. Q: Are food and happiness connected? A: Yes. It´s strange, serious and sometimes hilarious questions like these, that French illustrator and graphic designer Genevieve Gauckler has made up by the dozens for her exhibition Food Chain. The show consists of beautiful prints with funny and sweet characters and their obsession with eating. The title, Genevieve explains, is ambiguous: it expresses on the one hand the thought that through food all living beings are connected with each other, on the other side it makes clear that these ties can become chains. In other words: we can be captivated by our own consumerism. Gauckler: `Good ideas come when you merge two elements that dont belong together. That way you can create something interesting.´ This double meaning is translated in very colourful images, with simple potato-shaped figures who eat food, digest food, excrete food, throw up food or lack food. They pose questions that make you laugh and make you think about our sometimes perverse relation with food. Q: Is Genevieve Gauckler a good, friendly and funny artist? A: Definitely! Pretty Cool Crew: Interview: Geert van de Wetering, Camera: Niels de Roos, Editing: Ben de Loenen. Thanks to: Angelique Spaninks, MU, Eindhoven.

Jordanian Prince Invites Basketball Legend Rolando Blackman To Launch Generations For Peace - Abu Dhabi Camp An exciting new partnership between the National Basketball Association (NBA) and Generations For Peace has been confirmed for the Generations For Peace Abu Dhabi camp 09. The NBA are scheduled to send an expert team - made up of coaches and former players - to the Middle East to undertake basketball workshops with the youth leaders, as well as providing support and motivation throughout the camp. Following the announcement of His Highness Sheikh Hamdan Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, UAE Deputy Prime Minister, as a Founding Partner of Generations For Peace, Abu Dhabi will play host to the third annual Generations For Peace camp by bringing together youth leaders from nine Asian and African countries troubled by conflict and Abu Dhabi participating as the hosts. Founded by HRH Prince Feisal Al Hussein of Jordan in 2007, Generations For Peace uses sport as a vehicle for peace building in divided communities. Previously held in Amman, Jordan, youth leaders from sixteen countries learnt the skills to run peace programmes and cascade their learning back home. As a result of these camps, more than 45 peace projects using sport amongst youth and children in troubled areas were implemented by the end of 2008. The Generations For Peace Pioneer Certification Programme will be delivered during Abu Dhabi Camp 09 from leading international peace education experts and sport coaches. The training programme is composed of four key modules which focus on the roles Peace Pioneers will undertake within their communities: Peace Building; instructing children; training of trainers; Advocacy for Generations For Peace and Partners to the local communities. They will also receive sport training, rules and teaching skills in four sports: Softball, Football, Volleyball and Basketball. Virgin Atlantic have teamed up with Condé Nast Traveller to unveil the most stylish, innovative and luxurious hotels in the world - in their 'Red Hot List 2009'. With settings ranging from desert islands to capital cities, the list was chosen to cater for all tastes, and includes hotels from across the globe - and it appears it would take a little more than pool cabanas and Wi-Fi to impress in order to make the world’s top list. Unsurprisingly, service comes high on the judging criteria - with the top hotels having to prove that they're not all just style over substance. What they all have in common is that special touch, and the ability to know what their guests want, which puts them ahead of their competition. Some of the categories in this year's List include ‘Ones to Watch’ and '10 Hot Hotel People’ - which interviewed famous names such as Robert De Niro, Michelin-starred chef Angela Hartnett, and entrepreneur Sol Kerzner on what their favourite retreats and hot locations are.
