Secretary of the State Susan Bysiewicz on Monday honored nearly 90 World War II veterans from the former Soviet Union living in Connecticut during a Public Service Awards ceremony at the Greater Hartford/Mandell Jewish Community Center in West Hartford on May 11, 2009. “Though fighting under a different flag, these veterans were key allies of the United States during World War II, summoning the courage to defeat Nazi tyranny and advance the cause of freedom,” Bysiewicz said. “They endured great sacrifice and witnessed horrific atrocities, and did it without great fanfare – without seeking recognition or asking to be honored. Many were religiously persecuted in their home country after the war and sought refuge in the United States. Today we salute them as the greatest generation.”

Ashutosh Gowariker has done it again! After a verbal spat with hosts Sajid and Farah Khan at an awards ceremony, he had another run-in with Riteish Deshmukh and Boman Irani, who were hosting an international film award function held over the weekend. It is learnt that the Jodhaa Akbar director took objection to a skit they did on stage. Although the hosts did take-off on many other films, Ashutosh was the only one who took objection to their act. It seems Riteish and Boman did a spoof on all the films which were nominated in the best film category. For the Jodhaa Akbar act, Boman played Akbar while a starlet played Jodha. Riteish walked in dressed as Amitabh Bachchan in Shahenshah. When Boman asked Riteish who he was, the latter replied, 'Rishte mein tumhare baap lagte hai, lekin naam hai Shahenshah' to which Boman said, 'Tum Shahenshah toh main kaun hoon?' It was not at all offensive. Ashutosh didn't like the act and stormed into the green room in the middle of the show and lectured Riteish and Boman about poking fun at people and films. Everyone was taken aback by his over reaction. And if the grapevine is too be believed the organizers are now considering not inviting Ashutosh Gowariker for future events.

Working for the Dutch Art Directors Club (ADCN), we made 13 short films that were shown during the annual award ceremony for the best design and advertising. These ‘bumpers’ serve as a category introduction, and also show the names of the jury members. The idea behind the short films was that, as the new work is celebrated, the old work could be discarded. So for starters, we set the year-earlier annual on fire. And to get just the right dumpster atmosphere, we also physically marred the surface of the film in various ways.
