I got a chance to try out my friend's Canon 5D Mark II (see *******5DMarkII.info ) for a few hours. I've been wanting to check out the HD video capability of the camera, so I went to Dead Horse State Park (in Cottonwood, Arizona) to try it out with my Canon 600mm lens. Although there weren't many birds out that morning due to wind, I was able to test out the combination at the hummingbird feeder. This video shows what's possible using the HD video of the 5D Mark II and a super lens. It was really easy to do, and the quality of the picture is great. You'll notice a pause near the middle of the video - that's when I took a still picture - the camera stops long enough to take and store the still image, then automatically continues to record video! Very cool! More info about the 5D Mark II can be found at *******5DMarkII.info and you can see some of my better photography at *******EdsNatureImages****

When I talk about what it means to me to be a geek, I always talk about passion and drive. Being a geek isn't limited to only computers and code. There are film geeks, music geeks, gaming geeks, fashion geeks, gadget geeks and the list goes on and on. Most geeks have geeky inclinations in more than one area. I'm a gadget geek, a Mac geek, an organization geek and I'm a production geek. That last one is the one that applies to Brief 598. I want to learn how different types of shows are produced. Neal, my husband, is a gospel music geek. He likes southern gospel and black gospel and since we've been married 10 years, I've heard my share of it. There is a guy named Mark Lowry, who is in what I understand to be the top southern gospel group. He wrote the Christmas song, Mary Did You Know, and he also happens to be very funny when he performs. When Neal would watch Bill Gaither videos and Mark would start talking, I would start paying attention. A couple years ago, Mark Lowry emailed me. He said, "Slow down. You don't have to talk so fast. Some of us are too old!" I emailed back and asked if he was Mark Lowry, Mark Lowry. He was and is and long story short we've become friends. He wasn't singing with the Vocal Band when we met but this year he rejoined them and he invited us down for the production of one of their new videos. For the last couple of days, we've been hanging out behind the scenes learning about all the technology that goes into the production of one of these videos. In Brief 598, I talked to Eric Poland from Poland Productions about the setup and how much has changed since he started working on these videos in 1993. Eric's company also produced the videos for Microsoft's Mojave Experiment. We shot this Brief with the Canon 5D Mark II and no lighting, so as I'm talking to Eric, the lighting in the venue changed several times and got almost too dark near the end. We're experimenting with the 5D Mark II to see how lightly we can travel and still work.
