Another Of Our Favorite "Under-Recognized" Friends, Bridgette Doremire Is An Aero-Powerhouse One of the greatest of the many joys that comes our way are the friendships and relationships we develop with hundreds of people each year... some of whom truly impress us even though the normal rank and file of aviation rarely hear of them. It's our job to fix that, here and there. Bridgette Doremire is a good person to add to that group. Bridgette is a Master CFI, CFII, MEI, and Airframe & Powerplant Mechanic. She is an FAA Safety Team (FAAST) Volunteer and a Proficiency Instructor for both Cessna and Cirrus Pilot Associations. In those capacities, she has delivered lectures on GPS and Advanced Avionics at locations throughout California. As an avionics technician, she has conducted several IFR certification test flights for GPS, MFD, TCAD, Autopilot, FMS, and other avionics installations. She is the author of over 30 Qref Avionics & GPS Checklists and has published one book, “Flight Instructor Notebook”, a lesson plan guide for upcoming flight instructors plus sage advice on day-to-day flight instruction. Bridgette’s articles have appeared in numerous magazines and is active on many online aviation forums. Bridgette became a Master CFI in 2004 and a Cirrus Standardized Instructor in June 2005. She is a member of AOPA and NAFI. She is also a FAA Remedial Training Program Instructor for the Van Nuys FSDO. Bridgette specializes in GPS and Advanced Avionics Instruction. More than just learning the knob twists and button presses, Bridgette teaches integration of the GPS into the flying process. A member of the FAA/Industry Training Standards Program (FITS), she has authored two FAA-Accepted courses with several more pending FAA review. These courses integrate scenario-based training with advanced avionics and GPS, real training for today’s flying. Arlynn McMahon Takes Flight Instruction To New Heights We've still got a big smile on our face over the few days we spent at this year's Women In Aviation Conference... and not just because ANN's Jim Campbell got to play token male among the thousands of aero-minded women in attendance -- but simply for the positive vibe and the many great people we met, got to know and interviewed. One of the most memorable was a woman by the name of Arlynn McMahon, the newly minted National CFI of the Year for 2009. Arlynn, founding member of the SAFE movement, is also a chief flight instructor, a ground instructor, and the training center manager for Aero-Tech, a Part 141 Cessna Pilot Center at Lexington's Blue Grass Airport. Arlynn is a Master CFI who specializing in training future and current CFIs, and also carries the distinction of serving as a Designated Pilot Examiner and an FAA Safety Team representative. As noted above, McMahon is also a charter member of the Society of Aviation & Flight Educators. Arlynn is an active Multi-Engine Airline Transport Pilot as well as an active FAA Gold Seal CFI. She has been recognized by the National Association of Flight Instructors as a NAFI Master Instructor, and is a Cessna Factory FITS Authorized Instructor (CFAI). Her nearly 11,000 accident-free, incident-free violation-free hours range in a variety of Piper, Cessna, and Beech single and cabin-class multis. She has piloted aircraft for: banner tow, aerial traffic, fire patrol, maintenance-ferry pilot and instructor pilot. She served as Aero-Tech's Air-Taxi line pilot from 1981 to 1997 and as 135 Chief Pilot/Director of Operations from 1981 to 1995 for CE414 & BE58. Arlynn has enjoyed flying as PIC in Alaska, Canada, throughout the Caribbean, Central America and in each of the 48 Contiguous States in general aviation aircraft. A flight instructor since 1980, she has logged over 7,000 hours of dual given. She is an active FAA Accident Prevention Counselor and was the 1991 FAA Regional Flight Instructor of the Year. Arlynn specializes in teaching Aeronautical Decision-Making and Cockpit-Risk Management to the aircraft owner/non-professional pilot. In the 43-year history of the GA Awards program, we've learned that only seven women have earned the national recognition of CFI Of The Year, while Arlynn is the first woman in 14 years to earn this honor. Two Powerful Voices Fight For Excellence In Aero-EducationThere are a number of voices speaking loudly and clearly about matters we all need to address in terms of flight safety and aero-education. Two of the most prominent of those voices are Professional Aviation Educators Sandy and JoAnn Hill. The center of a massive controversy this year, Sandy and JoAnn are getting their lives back to normal in the wake of the separation from NAFI and the start of the independent Master Instructors LLC program. Master Instructors LLC has updated, restructured, and is once again available to all qualified applicants. Adhering to a rigorous continuing education and peer-review process, the program promotes professionalism among aviation educators and provides well-deserved recognition for their contributions to aviation education, training, and safety. The Master Instructor program was conceived and developed by MCFIs Sandy and JoAnn Hill, longtime CFIs and nationally known aviation educators. It has periodically been revised and expanded by them over the years. The Hills have been serving Master Instructors and other aviation educators since 1995, and have been responsible for reviewing more than 1,300 Master Instructor applications. The new company has a nine-member Board of Review who collectively has held Master accreditation for more than 85 years.Master Instructors LLC recently received a two-year letter of authorization from the FAA qualifying the program for flight instructor certificate renewal while the program is also FAA WINGS-approved. Master Instructors LLC currently has a letter of understanding with SAFE, the Society of Aviation and Flight Educators (www.SafePilots****). ANN is pleased to present a two-part interview with this amazing duo.... Group Calls For 'Swift Changes' As Crisis Continues At NAFI ANN broke the story about problems within the hallowed ranks of the National Association of Flight Instructors two months ago and the news has been coming fast and furious since then. Dissatisfaction with a number of NAFI board-level decisions led to creation of the 'Take Back Our National Association of Flight Instructors Committee' -- TBO NAFI. This committee, comprised of NAFI members, including Master Instructors and several Regional and National Flight Instructors of the Year, has called for swift and sweeping changes to the governance of NAFI. ANN reported that the crisis began in October when NAFI members learned two of the "most productive, well-liked, pro-instructor, and long-standing members of the Board" -- JoAnn and Sandy Hill -- would not be re-elected to their positions, and would be relieved of their day-to-day administration of the NAFI Master Instructor Program. "These issues served to focus long-due attention on the broader governance issues plaguing the NAFI Board," well-known Master Instructor Rich Stowell told Aero-News. The first informal meeting of TBO Committee members and others who wished to participate was scheduled for Friday, November 7th, at the AOPA Expo in San Jose, CA, where ANN took the opportunity to get some narrative on the matter from Stowell. In a recent e-mail, Stowell said, "On December 4th, Tom Poberezny and the NAFI Board blind-sided both TBO and the Hills with an e-mail demanding that Master Instructor Program administration be turned over to NAFI HQ," a move he said would "violate NAFI Board-approved policies and procedures controlling the administration of the Master Instructor Program." Irked further by a recent NAFI member survey prepared by the NAFI board without input from the Professional Standards Committees or TBO-NAFI, Stowell declared that the teleconference represents a "fork in the road." Poberezny responded that he is addressing multiple issues, making progress in what he sees as his number one priority -- redrafting NAFI By-laws -- and the transfer of administrative and operational responsibilities of NAFI programs to staff. "In conclusion, I do not see a 'fork in the road,' but a continuing dialogue that is so important to success. My role is not as a neutral facilitator between TBO and the NAFI Board, but rather a facilitator working with the NAFI Board on behalf of the NAFI membership, addressing the concerns presented," Poberezny said. "I will continue to work on solutions that build a stronger NAFI, both from a membership standpoint as well as industry stature. The December 9th TBO newsletter was disappointing, but I remain undaunted, and am confident that we will be successful with our future efforts." In an effort to get some insight into the conflict, ANN presents the attached interview with Stowell and has a similar discussion with EAA president Tom Poberezny scheduled shortly.
