You cannot see, hear, smell, taste, or touch radiation. You can only detect radiation with special equipment.
Detecting Non-Ionizing Radiation (NIR)
Since non-ionizing radiation is simply low-energy waves of the electromagnetic spectrum (radio waves or microwaves), detection is hard. The easiest way is to look for any nearby antennas, satellite dishes, or radio towers. Or, if you can listen to your radio, watch TV, have cell service or use wireless internet, Bluetooth, wireless mouse or keyboard you are definitely being exposed to NIR.
To measure the quantity of radio/microwaves you will need an EMF (electromagnetic field) meter. A very simple way to determine the wavelength of NIR is the length of the antenna. As a general rule, the shorter the antenna, the more energized the waves. To pick up radio waves, an antenna must be the length of the longest wavelength. You can compare the antenna length to the electromagnetic spectrum chart to find the energy intensity.
Detecting Ionizing Radiation
Ionizing radiation can be measured very precisely — much more precisely than other potentially hazardous materials. One of the basic measuring instruments is the Geiger-Muller counter. The instrument consists of a detector set at the end of a probe with counting electronics. This instrument counts the number of radioactive particles entering a sensitive detection chamber, and translates that signal into a needle movement on an analog dial or a value displayed on a screen.
The Geiger counter emits a click for every particle, so with only background radiation, the instrument clicks every few seconds. In a high radiation environment, it clicks rapidly in proportion to the radiation level. This way, the user gets a visible as well as audible measurement of radioactivity.
Some people receive exposure to radiation as part of their employment (radiologists and nuclear plant workers). Worker radiation exposures are carefully

In September 1982, Peter Coyle and Jeremy "Jem" Kelly met for the first time. Kelly had been guitarist in the Dance Party with Michael Head and co-founded the Wild Swans in 1980. Coyle had previously been in the Jass Babies, who had recorded a session for John Peel's BBC Radio 1 show in 1981.
After an invitation to record a Peel session, a number of new songs were created. Joined on keyboards by Kelly's fellow ex-Wild Swans member Ged Quinn, drummer Alan Wills and bassist Phil Lucking, the session was recorded in October 1982 and included "The First Picture of You". This led to the band being signed by Arista Records.
Produced by Nigel Gray, "The First Picture of You" became an iconic song for The Lotus Eaters in 1983, giving them a UK hit single before the band had even played a live gig. The band recorded a second session for Peel in October 1983.
The band's debut studio album, No Sense of Sin, was released in 1984 on Arista subsidiary Sylvan Records, preceded by two further singles, "You Don't Need Someone New" and "Out on Your Own". Both of these songs hit the top 100 of the UK Singles Chart, but owing to difficulties with producers and marketing, the impact of "The First Picture of You" was not repeated in the UK.
As well-known for their bizarrely teased haircuts as their hit single "I Ran (So Far Away)," A Flock of Seagulls were one of the infamous one-hit wonders of the new wave era. Growing out of the synth-heavy and ruthlessly stylish new romantic movement, A Flock of Seagulls were a little too robotic and arrived a little too late to be true new romantics, but their sleek dance-pop was forever indebted to the short-lived movement. The group benefitted considerably from MTV's heavy rotation of the "I Ran" video in the summer of 1982, but they were unable to capitalize on their sudden success and disappeared nearly as quickly as they rocketed up the charts.
Electronic Musician / Songwriter, Keyboardist and Mixing / Editing engineer. William "Bud" began working in the recording studio in Chicago around 1987~1988-ish a few years after the birth of house and industrial music. As the 'House' music sound began to become the mainstream choice across the US at the end of 1980's, replacing the Freestyle and syncopated Electro sounds in the majority of nightclubs across the US, LaTour at that time became a solo electronic artist around 1991 and charting seven dance singles from two albums in the early 1990's.

The following information pertains to radiation exposures of women who are pregnant and have questions about the risk of birth defects and miscarriage. It is also for men and women who are concerned about radiation exposures they have had that might impact the development of their sperm or their eggs ova and their risk of passing on genetic diseases because of the radiation exposure.
Radiation doses at levels known to cause observable health effects rarely occur on purpose except for some medical radiation therapies. By now you have to be asking what the level of radiation dose is for procedures you are familiar with, like x-ray examinations, compared to the doses in the chart. We want to get to that, but we first need to talk about radiation and cancer.
Using radiation offers many societal benefits, but what is radiation exactly? The term radiation covers a lot of things, but they are not all the same. When someone mentions the word radiation, we might think of the big mushroom cloud from a nuclear weapon explosion, the microwaves in our microwave oven, how our cell phones work, getting a suntan in a tanning salon, having a chest x ray, or nuclear power plants. In the broad category of radiation, the broad definition includes all of those things and more.
We need to narrow that broad definition of radiation to talk about the type of radiation that is the focus of information on this site. Radiation is energy in the form of waves beams or particles. Radiation waves are generally invisible, have no weight or odor, and have no positive or negative charge. Radioactive particles are also invisible, but they have weight which is why they are called a particle and may have a positive or negative charge. Some radiation waves can be seen and felt (such as light or heat), while others such as x rays can only be detected with special instrumentation.
