Community Service Worker Program by evergreencollege.ca
The West Orange Police Department’s Community Services Unit was created to strategically deploy the maximum number of police officers feasible in the center of the downtown West Orange area.
The police officers assigned to the target area were given a narrow job definition. While assigned to a walking post and/or utilizing police mountain bikes, they were to provide traditional police services, such as arresting offenders, protection of individual rights and maintaining a high visible presence. But, they were additionally directed to interact with residents and business owners. These Community Services Officers proactively solicit concerns and issues from residents and business owners.
The CSU officer has become the people’s representative in bringing the township’s services to action on neighborhood problems. This same officer also provides the follow-up to insure that the concerns were remedied.
To maximize the effectiveness of the unit and to further stabilize the neighborhood, the Watchung Heights Police Sub-Station was established. This was achieved by refurbishing a vacant 100-year-old firehouse, which was already owned by the Township.
One of the primary goals of the CSU is to create a positive impact on the youths of the neighborhood. These young people are our future residents and local leaders. The Community Services Unit has provided numerous police supervised youth activities, such as C.A.M.P. (Confidence, Achievement and Mentoring Program).
These Programs are intended to provide our youth with a level of self-confidence and team building skills as well as participating in structured excursions outside of the township. C.A.M.P. has an open door policy whenever the Sub-Station/Community Center is in operation (Monday thru Friday – 8:30 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., Saturday and Sunday – 12:00 noon to 8:00 p.m.).
Activities include but are not limited to: homework assistance; computer resource program; Friday night movies; bicycle safety courses; neighborhood clean-ups; out of community trips (i.e. ski trip, minor league baseball bus trip, Hooked on Fishing not on Drugs, Stokes State Forest Youth Confidence Course); and neighborhood holiday parties (Harvest Fest, Winter Holiday Party, etc). In exchange for taking part in these programs, the kids participate in neighbor hood clean ups and other events that benefit the community.
If you have any questions please call the Community Police Substation at 973-325-4038.
