Description: The kids of the cul-de-sac are living in a land of confusion. A little note: Due to a computer problem while making this video, the middle of the video starts to go a little bit out of sync. I tried to fix it, but it's not really that bad. Just a heads up. BY BRANDON TWICHELL ANCHOR MEGAN MURPHY You're watching multisource world news analysis from Newsy Confusion reigns in the Suez Canal after Iran said it would have two warships cross it and dock in Syria. Now the Associated Press says Iran has withdrawn its request to cross the canal without giving a reason. And to top it all off, Egypt says Iran never filed a request in the first place. Was Iran serious about crossing the canal - or was it trying to provoke the West? We’re looking at the Suez incident with coverage from The Wall Street Journal, Fox News, and The Washington Times. Iran claims the warships are training to combat Somali pirates and needed to dock in Syria. Israel says Iran is simply provoking them. A correspondent tells The Wall Street Journal Israel is also worried about Iran’s relationship with Syria. “Israel sees Syria as part of an axis with Iran, in alliance with Iran and Hezbollah. And so Israel might see this as sort of an attempt to sort of tighten a, you know, the noose around itself.” Some news sources say Iran never had permission to cross the Suez in the first place. A Fox News correspondent says Iran is simply doing what it always does - touting its power. “It’s likely, Shep, the Iranians are playing their usual game of trying to deflect attention from problems at home by provoking Israel and the West. It may also be that the Iranian leadership wants to send these warships through the Suez Canal to send a message to its own people that it is a player on the world stage.” But Israel decidedly viewed the movement as a clear provocation, with its foreign minister saying it “aggravates the situation in the region.” A writer for the Washington Times suggests the Iranian government is simply trying to distract an unhappy population -- with Israel as its scapegoat. “It shuts up the populace, since you can't very well side against your own government while it's fighting the Little Satan. It tamps down internal divisions, since no internal squabble can compare with the endless existential fight with the Zionist colonialist imperialist oppressor.” As late as Thursday, Israel’s Haaretz says Iran is still trying to get the warships to pass through the canal. Iran hasn’t sent warships through the Suez since 1979. 'Like' Newsy on Facebook to get updates in your news feed Get more multisource video news analysis from Newsy Transcript by Newsy
