Sharing unwelcome information is an unpleasant fact of life for everyone. No one like to receive bad news, and no healthy person likes to give it, so these messages can take a toll on everyone involved. However, it is possible to minimize the emotional impact these messages have, because you can take steps to share negative information without being negative. Learning how to craft these messages with sensitivity and honesty will make the task easier for you as a writer and the experience less traumatic for the recipients of your messages.

Every professional faces three business communication challenges: One, making every message and document more effective. Two, writing routine messages as quickly as possible to avoid getting swamped by the demands of everyday communication. And three, tackling big projects such as major reports and formal presentations without getting overwhelmed by the size of the task. Professionals who can handle these challenges are more likely to succeed in their current positions and get noticed at promotion time. One of the most important decisions to make when crafting persuasive messages is finding the optimum balance of emotional and logical appeals. Few message appeals are entirely emotional or entirely logical, so knowing enough about your audience to mix just the right blend of appeals will help you create more effective messages for both internal and external audiences. Universal Studios' ad campaign for the upcoming "Heroes: Season 2" DVD, launched on Metacafe today, brings collaborative commercial mashups to the online video space. Viewers can use Kaltura's collaborative editing tools on the Metacafe Heroes 2 channel to remix videos and create their own "Heroes moments." This campaign is the first of its kind in the online video space and could turn out to be a successful way to monetize short-form video. "We sort of start from the premise that the commercial break is dead. In the short-form video entertainment environment it just doesn't make sense to put a 30-second pre-roll in front of a 90-second video," Metacafe Corporate Communications Director Michelle Cox says. Interactive and social campaigns that let users engage with content prove to be the most effective and are gaining momentum, according to Cox. Universal Studios Home Entertainment provided footage from the second season of "Heroes" for the campaign. This is new territory for Kaltura as well, and if advertisers continue to take advantage of their platform, it could be an important source of revenue for the company. It will also allow them to gain professional video footage for their store of sharable and re-mixable video content. I interviewed Cox yesterday in the Beet.TV offices. --Kelsey Blodget, Associate Producer Update: Read the company's press release here.

On September 5 we had a busy day here at United Way Capital Area and Hands On Central Texas! We had more than 500 people from organizations across the community volunteering their time to projects for more than 32 agencies. The occasion started with a kickoff event at Alamo Park. The keynote speaker was Austin Police Chief Art Acevedo, who got everyone fired up about their projects and talked about the huge impact volunteers make on the greater Austin community. Other speakers included David Balch, President and Chief Professional Officer at United Way Capital Area, Mando Rayo, Director of Hands On Central Texas and Jan Monney, Senior Vice President of Corporate Communications and Business Operations at Freescale Semiconductor (photographed above). The LIVE UNITED theme was present among everyone! Give. Advocate. Volunteer. Volunteers showed support by wearing the LIVE UNITED t-shirts. Throughout the day volunteers engaged in activities that ranged from upgrading childcare facilities, playground construction, helping out food banks, creating literacy materials for Austin ISD students, assisting students with job search to painting, deconstruction of homes and garden work. A special thank you to our signature sponsor Freescale Semiconductor. Other sponsors of the event included Austin Coca-Cola, Clif Bars, City of Austin Neighborhood Housing and Community Development Office and Alamo Recreation Center. And, thank you to all of the teams who participated in Day of Caring and embraced the idea of LIVE UNITED. This was an incredible show of community support!
