Global ad network Adconion acquired production studio KTV Digital Media today and officially entered the branded entertainment game, driving home the point that product placement in online video is here to stay. Angel investor Ron Conway called it "the next multi-billion dollar industry" at TechCrunch50 in September, and more and more ad networks are getting on board. Check out our previous interviews with Digitas and Ogilvy about their branded content offerings.
Adconion launched its video syndication platform AMG-TV in late September (now called Adconion.TV), and with the addition of KTV Digital Media has formed its own branded content division, RedLever, which will produce original branded content for its clients. In September I interviewed Adconion President of North America Keith Kaplan about the evolution of the company's services.
In the segment, he discusses Adconion.TV and its first syndication partner, Vuguru, the new media studio for Michael Eisner's The Tornante Company. Adconion syndicates Vuguru's show "Back on Topps," a office sports comedy web series created by the Sklar brothers.

Drew Lipsher, a partner at early-stage venture capital firm Greycroft Partners LLC, says the continued pressure on traditional media companies means opportunities for startups.
"It is a great time for a lot of young companies focusing on digital media," says Lipsher in this episode of The Deal's Behind the Money show. "The biggest challenge is, How do you build a company that's a large enough scale so that it's attractive to the major media companies?"
The startups that have the best opportunities fall into two categories: those that have the ability to scale in consumption, audience or revenues; and those that are building "pieces of the services side of the media business that are going to help drive the scale," says Lipsher.
In the latter camp, there are opportunities for new businesses to develop advertising metrics, such as measuring brand lift and consumer engagement.
Before becoming a venture capitalist, Lipsher, 42, had a long career in media, serving in executive roles at IGA, BMG Entertainment and Warner Music Group. At Greycroft, he has led the firm's investments in ImageSpan LLC, a service provider for digital content production, licensing and acquisition; MDX Medical LLC, developer of physician finder Vitals****; and Worldwide Biggies, a digital entertainment studio founded by Albie Hecht, former president of Nickelodeon Entertainment and Spike TV.

David Payne, former chief of CNN****, has been working his start-up called ShortTail Media, which aims to help publishers increase revenue by integrating television advertising the online experience. The company, an ad network of sorts, allows publishers to insert television spots or "pre-roll" video advertising into users experience as they call up text pages to read.
