Congress president Sonia Gandhi visited Teethwal on the Line of Control on her second day in the earthquake-hit areas of Jammu and Kashmir.
She inspected the relief and rehabilitation work in the region.
Very few national leaders have been so close to the LoC. In fact, all that separated Sonia Gandhi and the people from PoK, was the Kishanganga river.

Devastation in Japan is making headlines around the world as the country recovers from the 8.9 magnitude earthquake that sent a tsunami crashing over the mainland. Some say it’s a tragic natural disaster, but some are wondering -- Is the moon to blame? (Video from ABC)
On March 19th, the moon’s orbit will be 221-thousand miles from Earth -- the closest it’s been in 19 years.
It’s called the supermoon, a term coined by Richard Nolle for when the moon’s orbit is nearest Earth - and the sun, moon and earth are all in alignment. That means the gravitational pulls of the moon and the sun combine to cause higher tides. (Video from Perigee-Syzygy)
This kind of alignment only happens every 10 to 20 years -- so when it does, KGTV says we notice.
“There is a precedent. The deadly tsunami in Indonesia happened two weeks before the 2005 supermoon ... Still and cyclone Tracy laid waste to supermoon year of 1974. There were also extreme weather events in the supermoon years of 1955 and 1992. ... However, most astronomers say this is just coincidence.”
Talk of the supermoon began weeks before the earthquake hit Japan and one AccuWeather blogger says he didn’t believe it. But now, he’s been convinced.
“I believe that the Earth may have already felt some of the supermoon's effects. It could be a huge coincidence that this earthquake was not influenced by the supermoon. But in my totally unscientific opinion, having no hard evidence to back it up, it doesn't seem like just coincidence to me.”
A blogger for Discover says -- there’s no way the moon caused the earthquake in Japan.
“When the earthquake in Japan hit... the moon was about 240,000 miles away. So not only was it not at its closest point, it was actually farther away than it usually is on average. The earthquake in Japan - and other natural disasters likely to happen ... are terrible tragedies. We’re not making it any better by panicking over something we know isn’t real.”
Most astronomers say any gravitational effects typically happen within three days of the supermoon, but Nolle tells ABC Melbourne, the time span can be longer.
NOLLE: “...[W]e don’t have to have one at the maximum close approach to have a notable affect. For example, the February 18th supermoon just passed. That one was in effect for various reasons from the twelfth of February through the twenty-first and, of course, we had the awful Christchurch earthquake on the twenty-first.”
A TG Daily blogger still doesn’t buy into the moon phenomenon and says the special supermoon alignment will only make for a great photo.
“Indeed, because it's a full moon, the sun and moon are actually pulling on the earth from opposite directions, weakening rather than strengthening tides. So just sit back and appreciate the view.”
With March 19 fast-approaching, is more destruction to come? Or, will the supermoon just make for an interesting picture?

In world news — an historic massive earthquake hits Japan early Friday. At 8.9 magnitude, experts say it’s the world’s fifth-biggest quake ever recorded. It also triggered a 13-foot tsunami, and has sent out similar tsunami warning across the Pacific -- from the U.S. West Coast to Southern New Zealand. RT reports on the aftermath.
“The destruction is widespread. We know that 200 people have been washed away with buildings cars and ships — all swept by those waters. The ramifications are widespread. A 4.5 magnitude earthquake has now struck Hawaii, and we are expecting residents there for tsunamis to reach its shore in the next few hours.”
Still in world news — Outgunned and lacking official training, Libyan rebels are under increased pressure from forces loyal to Muammar Gaddafi, who appear to be on a roll early Friday.
Euronews reports, the rebels are said to have lost control of strategic oil towns Ras Lanuf and Zawiyah.
Rebel: “Allahu akbar!”
“Their enthusiasm may be in tact but the fighters are up against a mounting counter-offensive by forces loyal to the Libyan leader. ... Top US intelligence officials are now saying the rebels have lost momentum and are not likely to dislodge Gaddafi.”
In U.S. news — Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker will likely sign the bill that will curb collective bargaining rights for union government employees.
Milwaukee’s WTMJ reports the state’s Democrats and pro-union groups say the fight to kill the bill is still not over. Investigations are underway to find out whether Republicans broke any laws in advancing the bill to a vote.
In sports -- after extending negotiations by a week, the clock is about to run out on the NFL labor talks.
The Los Angeles Times reports the NFL Player’s Association will announce later today if it will decertify as a union -- a move to ensure the owners cannot lock out the players. If the talks do not conclude today, a potential lock out would mean all the players are going to need jobs somewhere else for a year. The two sides enter the last day of negotiations on a positive note -- after recently settling how to divvy up $4 billion of television profits. (VIDEO: Fox Sports)
In entertainment news -- Charlie Sheen had a few more house guests than expected when the Los Angeles Police burst through the door of his Mullholland Estates manor Thursday night. ITN has more.
“Officers searched the home of the Two and a Half Men Star Thursday night, looking for fire arms. Sheen’s ex-wife Brooke Mueller obtained a restraining order against the troubled actor after production on his show was suspended by CBS. According to the LA Police the restraining order against Charlie means he can’t have weapons or ammunition.”
Sheen’s lawyer reports to The Insider someone filed a “reckless” claim against the star and only a rifle dated in the 1800’s was confiscated. This comes in the same week Sheen sued Warner Brothers in a $100 million wrongful termination lawsuit.

Tokyo trembles as powerful earthquake hits home

First up, world news. Violence escalates in Libya, and Al Jazeera estimates at least 250 people may have died in the capital city Tripoli overnight.
In this Al Jazeera exclusive video, protesters are shown trying to escape gunfire. International Federation of Human Rights puts the death toll overall at about 300 to 400 people.
The Guardian reports the UN Security Council is going to meet in a closed session to discuss Libyan leader Moammar Gaddafi’s brutal crackdown on protesters. Libya's deputy ambassador to the UN has appealed for starting a no-fly zone over the country, to help stop "a real genocide.”
Still in world news — a devastating 6.3 magnitude earthquake hit the New Zealand city Christchurch last night.
Sources including the New Zealand Herald say at least 65 people are killed. Rescue efforts continue, as 100 others are feared trapped.
Yesterday’s quake was not as powerful as the one that struck Christchurch last September, but it did have a shallower epicenter, which lead to more damage. (Video: Sky News)
In business news — the escalating violence in Libya is pushing oil prices to rise and European and Asian shares to fall.
The New York Times says light, sweet crude oil for April delivery surged to $97 a barrel in pre-market trading. Libya has the largest oil reserves in Africa, and prices might rise even more should the world gets cut off from Libya’s supply.
In U.S news -- thousands of Chicago voters will head to the polls today ready to elect a fresh new face in the mayor’s office. Former Mayor Richard Daley conceded to run for a record seventh term in office -- leaving his coveted 22 year seat as mayor up for grabs.
ABC News reports the latest polls show front runner Rahm Emanuel well ahead of his rivals. Former Senator Carol Moseley Braun and city official Gerry Chico are expected to gain on his lead -- but it’s not likely they’ll survive the day.
All of the candidates have had their fair share of trouble on the campaign trail -- Braun used the words “rape and robbery” to describe her opponents and Emanuel’s ballot fiasco questioned whether or not the former White House Chief of Staff still lived in the Windy City. The polls close at 7 pm and only one lucky candidate can inherit the $655 million budget gap the former administration left behind.

Muzzafarabad, July 12: Azad Kashmir’s future is as dark and gloomy today as it was in 1947. Pakistan’s army and its intelligence agencies rule `Azad Kashmir’ and control its major establishments. During the 2005 Kashmir Earthquake, in which over 75,000 people were killed, 5 billion dollars in aid arrived from all around the world. For reconstruction and development, the Government of Pakistan formed Earthquake Reconstruction and Rehabilitation Authority (ERRA). But ultimately it became yet another forum to accommodate retired senior military officers. Over the years the authority has been criticized for non-developmental spending on luxury goods and its fake statistics. ERRA claims to have spent 2 billion dollars in earthquake hit areas, but people ask where has the money gone as nothing has been built so far.
