Survival Under Atomic Attack is a 1951 Civil Defense film which focuses on what the average American can do to protect himself if caught out in the open or at home during a nuclear attack. Narrated by the magnificent journalist Edward R. Murrow, the film shows clips of actual nuclear bomb tests interspersed with dramatizations of citizens huddling in gutters, houses, and fallout shelters. Murrow advises the audience that the worst thing to do after an attack is to flee the area, saying that the enemy would love for our factories, offices, and homes to be empty and unproductive. Instead, he suggests, people should take cover for a short time and then continue working and producing. The dangers of nuclear fallout are not discussed and Murrow even cites Japan as an example for both how dangerous nuclear bombs can be (if they’d known how to take cover, lives could have been saved), and how benign fallout is (Murrow says that most Japanese survivors did not suffer from radiation sickness). Through editing, many different scenes of interest are shown including an air-raid alert, bomb blasts, and a typical American family preparing for an attack. Engrossing for its use of powerful historical footage and for its blatantly false optimism about the effect of nuclear war, Survival Under Atomic Attack is a powerful civil defense film that will amaze viewers. Cold War propaganda is one of the most insidious types of propaganda, and it's at a fever pitch in this film.

As desegregation was reaching a fever pitch in the 1950's, the progressive New York City board of Education implemented a progressive and (most importantly) aggressive integration policy. The heroic efforts of the administrators, parents, and teachers are captured in this significant historical documentary, Let Us Break Bread Together. A fascinating look at the history of racism in America, prejudice in schools and the value of school integration takes center stage. With racial prejudice and hatred threatening to explode at any moment, the NYC Board of Education was one of the few in the nation to step up to the challenge of safely and justly ending discrimination by integration in the New York City public Schools. Let Us Break Bread Together is a top notch historical document in the history of discrimination in American and the difficulty and triumph of school integration.

The result of these comments played a role in getting Charlie Chaplin kicked out of America. After Limelight, Charlie Chaplin took another vacation to England, wanting to show his new wife and children his native country. Upon leaving the territorial waters of the United States of America, Charlie Chaplin received a cable, informing him that the State Department had rescinded his reentry permit -- effectively locking him out of the country as an undesirable alien. There were many reasons for this -- Charlie Chaplin's unorthodox political views, the false accusation that he was a Communist, and not least of all, money. There would have been an attempt by the federal government to seize Charlie Chaplin's assets, which were enormous. However, his wife Oona returned to the United States, and promptly took all of the liquid assets, as well as liquidating everything she could -- leaving the government without a penny for its' trouble. Yet Chaplins troubles were not over, as he still refused to change his unorthodox views. In 1948 Chaplin decided to travel overseas and applied for a re-entry permit in order to return to the United States. The Immigration Department stalled on the application for some weeks and then, when reservations were already made, arrived one day at his home. When the deputation arrived, it consisted of a stenographer, an FBI agent and an immigration officer, who told him that they had the right to demand Chaplins evidence under oath. The unexpected inquisition lasted for four hours and was recorded by the stenographer. It contained personal questions about Chaplins racial origins, political views and sex life. He found the enquiries into his life, thought and opinions most personal, insulting and disgusting. However, they failed to discover any reason to deny him re-entry and had no choice but to grant him the permit. Not to be outdone though, the US Treasury immediately put in a claim for $1 million in taxes and demanded a bond of $1.5 million before he left the country. In any event, Chaplin decided not to leave the country after all. In 1949 the FBI had a request from the Assistant Attorney-General, Alexander Campbell, for the Chaplin files, since a Security-R investigation was pending. The files were disappointing to him. It has been determined that there are no witnesses available who could offer testimony that Chaplin has been a member of the Communist Party in the past, is now a member, or has contributed funds to the Communist Party. However, the heated paranoia in Government to take action against suspected high profile communists like Chaplin was now beginning to reach fever pitch. It was an open secret that the FBI was monitoring Chaplin night and day for any potential communist activity, but not widely known that they were failing to obtain any incriminating evidence against him. In 1952, Chaplin sailed to England for the premier of his latest film, Limelight. Before he had arrived at his destination, it was announced that the United States Attorney-General, Judge McGranery, had rescinded Chaplins re-entry permit and ordered the Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) to hold him for hearings when or if he attempted to re-enter the country. These hearings, he said, will determine whether he is admissible under the laws of the United States. The Justice Department added that the action was being taken under the US Code of Laws on Aliens and Citizenship, Section 137, Paragraph (c), which permitted the barring of aliens on grounds of morals, health or insanity, or for advocating Communism or associating with Communist or pro-Communist organizations. When Chaplin arrived in England, after hearing the news en route, he was defiant: The US Government does not go back on anything it says. It will not go back on my re-entry permit. These are days of turmoil and strife and bitterness. This is not the day of great artists. This the day of politics and Ive never been political. I have no political convictions. Im an individualist and I believe in liberty." Link to article:

Prince William and Kate Middleton are getting married in July 2011-- well, if you believe the British bookies anyway. Rumors of a royal engagement have come and gone during Kate and Will’s eight-year courtship, but for some reason, those rumors have hit a fevered pitch. So what exactly are the clues that the prince is about to put a ring on it? Let’s start with Radar Online. “The engagement announcement is anticipated to come shortly after the Royals spend Christmas together, with the wedding scheduled for next summer.” The article claims this to be true due to quote “recent developments” Well, here’s one of those recent developments from ABC. “Kate and William were just snapped arriving at a wedding together. For those who read the tea leaves, that was a huge deal. The Daily Mail just published snaps of Kate’s mother learning how to hunt dear on a royal estate. You gotta know how to kill animals if you’re going to hang hard with the Windsor clan.” It doesn’t stop there. The Washington Post relays a rumor that Ms. Middleton has had already found her wedding dress designer. “...the plot thickens -- Kate reportedly wore a dress custom-designed by designer Daniella Issa Helayel who -- DING DING DING -- also designs wedding dresses.” And according to NBC, even the palace is prepared for William to drop to one knee. REPORTER: “The most serious sign? Jobson says Scotland Yard is now grooming a personal bodyguard for the middle-class fiance who could one day be Queen.” ROBERT JOBSON (News of the World Editor) “From the moment Kate becomes engaged, everything around her changes. She’s going to have a guy with a gun standing next to her most of the time.” Of course a royal wedding would be exciting-- but one Telegraph reporter says, it’s not just the celebrity factor that’s got people betting on this rumor. “What rankles...is the oft-repeated dismissal of the self-made Middletons as being too ‘middle class’ for the hoity-toity haute monde....so when [William] gets down on one knee and asks for the hand in marriage of his middle-class, middle-of-the-road, middle-England Middleton, it will be a sweet moment of victory, for Kate -- and for all she represents.” The Times of India reports the odds are so high for a 2011 wedding that some UK bookmakers are no longer accepting bets on this royal rumor. The Palace will stay mum on the issue until the Prince officially pops the question.

A Russian aide to British parliament member Mike Hancock has been arrested on suspicion of espionage. Mike Hancock’s position in parliament and his reported flair for Russian women make this story sound like a Tom Clancy novel. Sky News ramped up the rhetoric -- implying Hancock has access to governmental and military secrets. “So would have access in his office to quite sensitive information surrounding the military, by default really. He as a Portsmouth MP would have close connections to the royal navy there.” And the Mirror highlights physical attributes of the aide -- Katia Zatuliveter -- and her wardrobe choices, suggesting Hancock was a target for a sleeper spy. “‘Certainly some thought she was charming and intelligent. She would walk around in very short skirts and high heels with Hancock and they would be seen having lunch together.’” Concern over Russian spies reached fever pitch as Anna Chapman was found to have had UK citizenship. But a writer for The Guardian asks - the Cold War is over, right? “Incriminating evidence, we are told, is that Hancock has tabled questions to ministers about the Trident missile system... Serious spying ... is done silently, or as silently as possible. Planting parliamentary questions is akin to shouting from the rooftops.” RT provides a broader context for Hancock’s political appointments and access to information – but it’s much more fluff than substance. “He was chair and is now vice chair of All Party Parliamentary group on Russia. So they meet once every so often and talk about Russia and what British policy towards Russia should be. Not necessarily making policy, but certainly advising on it. He’s also on the defense select committee, which sounds much more serious than it is in fact, because the defense select doesn’t necessarily have access to secretive information.” Hancock may not be the best mouthpiece right now -- himself out on bail under charges of indecent assault. His explanations sound a little less James Bond and more Spies Like Us. “But what on earth was she spying on? The House of Commons relies on leaks to survive. And as far as I’m concerned, there was nothing that she was doing for me that was in any way sensitive.” The truth - we may never know. Hancock explains to The Telegraph that Katia’s arrest information may never be released. "Because the system we work under is I will never see that evidence, she will never see the evidence and only a secret court will have that evidence and the desk of the home secretary. So we live in a system where you can be deported from this country without ever knowing the reasons why or what you’ve done.”
