People often wonder if using sign language with babies will delay speech. I have posted videos of my daughter, Fireese, since she was one year. She has just turned two and I want you to see how verbal she it. Signing has not delayed her language at all :-) for more info on signing with babies or go to and visit the parenting & kids section to learn how to sign with your baby. As many of you know, Fireese was a signing baby and is almost 2 and a half and reading. I posted this new video of her because I want people to see that signing has not inhibited her speech at all. I believe that signing has actually given her a good foundation and interest in letters and words. We do not force her to learn anything, she is simply interested in words and we show her what she wants to know. Fireese was a signing baby and is now a signing toddler. She is just over two and still loves learning signs. We've always spelled kiwi with her (see my first video) and now at 2 she knows how to spell it :-) For more info and videos see or to learn how to sign with your baby go to and look under the parenting & kids section for 'how to sign with your baby' videos. http://www.mysmarthands.com http://www.learnbabysigning.com Our wonderful friend, MJ, gave Fireese her sign name recently and we wanted to thank her for it! This is what MJ said about her name: "Her name sign signifies intelligence, independence, uniqueness, and the ability to dream and prosper hugely! NO ONE else has her sign name!" Please be aware that sign names are only given by a deaf person. A hearing person cannot give you a sign name. If you are taking a baby signing class with a hearing instructor and she gives you or your baby a sign name please be aware that it isn't right.

http://www.mysmarthands.com This is an old video of Fireese when she was almost 11 months old. We were interviewed on the CBC's Gill Deacon Show. http://www.mysmarthands.com http://www.learnbabysigning.com Fireese is now 2 and three quarters, watch as she shows off her printing skills :-) People often email me and ask if they should continue signing with their child after they start talking. I always say 100% yes! It is so valuable beyond being able to simply communicate their needs to you early. Plus it is a great second language to know. Here is an article I wrote about the benefits of signing with preschoolers: http://www.babies-and-sign-language.com/baby-sign-language-preschoolers.html For more info please visit my website http://www.mysmarthands.com Join our baby signing group on facebook: http://www.new.facebook.com/group.php?gid=7749175188

So we know babies generally do not sign back until around 6 months old. Even though Malynn just turned 3 months old, we thought we'd at least start with a couple simple signs & reinforce them knowing Malynn wouldn't sign back for a few months but at least wanted to expose her to them--Little did we know she would sign back to us! As promised, here are links for Baby Signing / Baby Sign Language: Here's videos on YouTube with adorable & ever so smart, Fireese, from MySmartHands.com: http://www.youtube.com/user/SmartHandsCA http://www.mysmarthands.com http://www.signingtime.com/ http://www.sign2me.com/index.php (Pardon our unkemptness, but both Malynn & I just woke up when Jennifer started video taping.)
