Relief agencies drop food, water and medicines to flood-ravaged areas of South Asia Thursday August 9th, 2007 Aid workers are taking advantage of a brief lull in the rains to assist the areas inundated by record monsoon flooding. But the demand far outstrips relief supplies and thousands of villages remain submerged. Bangladesh and Nepal have received aid from the UN World Food Program and UNICEF but the agencies have received no official requests from India. An editorial in the Hindustan Times argues that authorities in northern India's Uttar Pradesh, Assam and Bihar states should have done much more before hundreds of people died and millions were displaced. The editorial states 'Floods are nothing new in these areas. It is the intensity of the floods that differ from year to year. The state governments' lack of preparedness is criminal.' In an interview with APTN, the UN's regional health boss describes the staggering humanitarian crisis facing flood refugees and relief workers. --Sent via *******heyspread**** : Upload videos to multiple sites quickly

Monsoons batter northern India, Bangladesh and Nepal, leaving at least 360 dead and 20 million homeless Tuesday August 7th, 2007 Steady monsoon rains normally batter South Asia between June and September. But officials say this summer's rain and flooding may be the worst in 30 years. Because so many people live in low-lying areas, they have little protection from floods. The people of Bangladesh, Nepal, and India's Uttar Pradesh and Bihar states are also among Asia's poorest. Marzio Babille, the chief of health for the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) reports that clean water, basic hygiene and sanitation are 'an apocalyptic issue' in these countries. Everywhere there are dangerous shortages of food, medicines and clean water. Local health authorities also warn about epidemics of encephalitis, malaria, dysentery, dengue fever and other diseases. In a report issued today, the Geneva-based World Meteorological Association, another UN agency, said many parts of the globe have experienced weather extremes since the beginning of the year. It includes the current monsoon and flooding in South Asia. APTN cameras recorded the ongoing flood damage and relief efforts in Bangladesh, Nepal and northern India. --Sent via *******heyspread**** : Upload videos to multiple sites quickly

6 inches of rain in 24 hours in central and southern England causes worst flooding in 60 years July 24, 2007: The Independent newspaper calls it 'A 21st century catastrophe.' Heavy rains between last Friday and Saturday caused an estimated billion in damage and left a third of a million people without drinking water, thousands more homeless and several towns isolated. The Guardian newspaper reveals the previous Labour government ignored two separate reports in 2004 and 2005, warning of inadequate drainage systems nationwide. The government has now ordered an independent review of the disaster and promised an additional 00 million to improve flood defences. The flooding coincides with a new study to be published in the science journal Nature that links human-induced climate change to rainfall patterns. The director of climate research at Environment Canada, Francis Zweirs, who co-authored the study, told the Globe and Mail, 'It's the first time we've detected in precipitation data a clear imprint of human influence on the climate system...Temperature changes we can cope with. But water changes are much more difficult...That will have economic impacts, and impacts on food production and could ultimately displace population.' APTN has video of the inundated British countryside. --Sent via *******heyspread**** : Upload videos to multiple sites quickly

More at Ministry of Disaster Preparedness caught off guard 2007-10-01 Since August, flood rains have ravaged Uganda. State authorities claim at least 49 dead and 400,000 displaced. With no contingency plan in place, and a paltry budget The Ugandan Ministry of Disaster Preparedness was caught off balance. According to Emmanuel Gyehazo of the Ugandan newspaper The Monitor, the government ignored a meteorological report warning of potential flood rains. Criticising the government's delayed reaction Gyehazo said 'like they say, until it rains don't believe what the weatherman says.'
