Orem Chiropractor - How Good Posture Goes Bad
Orem Chiropractor - R. Ned McArthur, D.C.
Hi this is Dr Ned McArthur
Today I'm starting a series of videos inspired by a 2012 Prevention Magazine article entitled
seven weird ways your posture affects your health and happiness.
Today's topic: Bad posture as a contributor to depression.
We can all picture the kind of head down, slumped and timid posture a depressed person can exhibit. In this case emotion leads to a certain posture and body position. The question we're now asking is can our posture and body position lead to the emotion, and more importantly can changing the body posture change the emotion.
One study found that people who experienced bipolar disorder showed posture and balance signs prior to their bi polar symptoms.
I am not saying that bad posture leads to depression or bi polar disorder. What I am saying is that poor posture and balance are some of the early signs of those dreadful conditions.
In a study from San Francisco State University, students were told to either walk down a hall in a slouched position or to skip. The slouchers reported increased feelings of depression and lower energy than skippers.
Feeling blue? Feeling down in the dumps? Do you want to change the way you're feeling? Change your posture. Stand up straight, put your hands on your hips, do a fist pump, smile, skip or any other movements that are associated with happiness and confidence. Try these out and tell me what you think.
Thanks for watching.
