LEARN MORE ABOUT THE 2009 DODGE CHALLENGER R/T: *******www.edmunds****/insideline/do/News/articleId=130808 ENGLISHTOWN, New Jersey — There has been lots of speculation about the speed of the new 2009 Dodge Challenger R/T with its 375-horsepower 5.7-liter V8, and we were able to conduct our own independent testing at Old Bridge Township Raceway Park in Englishtown, New Jersey, the site of the official introduction of the 2009 Dodge Challenger lineup. This is the very first chance to test the performance of Chrysler's new muscle car in R/T trim. Our data includes 0-60-mph acceleration, quarter-mile performance, braking distance and slalom speed, as well as insight from IL's test-driver. Chrysler based its introduction of the 2009 Dodge Challenger SRT8, R/T and SE at Old Bridge Township Raceway Park, a traditional stop for the NHRA's professional drag-racing championship. Thanks to our portable Racelogic VBOX III testing gear, we were able to use the track for performance testing, although the lack of a suitable plot of pavement precluded skid pad evaluation. The 2009 Dodge Challenger R/T with its 375-hp 5.7-liter V8 and six-speed manual transmission accelerated to 60 mph in 5.9 seconds (5.5 seconds with 1 foot of rollout like on a drag strip), then reached the quarter-mile in 14.1 seconds at 100.8 mph. In comparison, the 315-hp 2008 Mustang Bullitt we tested late last year with a 4.6-liter V8 and Tremec five-speed manual transmission ran to 60 mph in just 5.2 seconds. The Bullitt also ran a 13.8-second quarter-mile at 102.1 mph. At 4,041 pounds, the R/T weighs about 100 pounds less than a 2009 Dodge Challenger SRT8 with a six-speed transmission. In fact the R/T is only fractionally slower to 60 mph than the SRT8's 5.5 seconds (5.2 seconds with 1 foot of rollout). The difference lies in the higher redline of the SRT8's 425-hp 6.1-liter Hemi, which enables the car to pull past 60 mph in 2nd gear. In comparison, the R/T requires a shift into 3rd gear.

FULL MUSTANG GT500 COVERAGE INSIDELINE.COM: *******www.edmunds****/insideline/do/Drives/Followup/articleId=145566?tid=edmunds.il.home.photopanel..1.* It's something like trying to drive the 2010 Ford Shelby GT500 on a roller-coaster, only there are no steel tracks to keep you from slithering off the pavement and ending up in a flaming heap of 540-horsepower Mustang. You can't even see where you're going, really. Hard on it, the GT500's rear tires begin spinning just as you can see nothing but sky in the windshield. You're on top of the hump at the entrance to Infineon Raceway's Turn 6, and as your stomach and both right-side tires go weightless, you start a long, long dive to the left, sliding sideways all the way down the hill and around the 180-degree corner. The Shelby GT500 is so torqued up with the cornering force from the low-profile 19-inch tires and the drive from the supercharged V8 that you can practically hear the welds popping in the chassis. But something is different this time — palms are not slick with sweat, tires are not threatening to let go at the most inopportune moment and steering left in order to go right is a joy and not a reflex of self-preservation. The 2010 Ford Shelby GT500 gets 2 mpg more on the EPA highway cycle this year. The Ford engineers are really proud of this. But every time we make another lap and slide down Turn 6, we have our doubts that fuel economy is what this car is about. Serving Our Inner Adolescent We're behaving like adults as the Ford engineers tell us all about the 2010 Ford Shelby GT500, even as we hear a couple of the cars making shake-down runs on the quarter-mile strip at Infineon Raceway a few hundred feet away. And in many ways, the GT500 itself is trying to act more like an adult, casting aside the muscle-bound character of the 2007 Ford Shelby GT500. As the Ford people tell us, they started with the limited-production 2008 Ford Shelby GT500KR, the exclusive (1,700 examples built) and revenue-enhancing (MSRP $79,995) Mustang produced last year. And aside from a few fewer Shelby badges (the KR had many to spare), the GT500 is like the KR in almost every way, except it's built at the Mustang plant in Flat Rock, Michigan, rather than at the Shelby facility in Las Vegas. You can tell as soon as you open the new GT500's hood, complete with hot-air extractors. The supercharged and intercooled DOHC 5.4-liter V8 with its truck-style iron block is still in place, but now it carries a conical air filter in its own sealed cold-air box behind the left-side headlight, an innovation that increases airflow while resisting power-sapping heat soak. For the GT500, this new cold-air intake required the migration of the iconic Cobra badge on the grille from the left side to the right side.

Hi-Res Videos: *******www.hulu****/edmunds-in side-line Our 2010 Hyundai Genesis Coupe 3.8 Track is painted Bathurst Black. That's Bathurst as in Bathurst 1000, a 620-mile (1,000-km) race on Australia's Mount Panorama Circuit, a 3.9-mile road course with 23 turns, grades of up to 16 percent and a 1.2-mile-long straightaway named Conrod Straight after a spectacular engine failure endured by racer Frank Kleinig in 1939. Only heavily modified Ford Falcons and Holden Commodores in the V8 Supercar series (Australia's take on NASCAR) race at Bathurst today, so there's no obvious connection to the unassuming black clearcoat on our V6-equipped 2010 Hyundai Genesis Coupe 3.8 Track. But as we drive the 2010 Hyundai Genesis Coupe, we can imagine Hyundai's chassis engineers fine-tuning the ride and handling of their first rear-wheel-drive coupe on the demanding Bathurst circuit. Probably the cost constraints of building a $30,000 car don't allow for working holidays Down Under. Yet the 2010 Genesis Coupe isn't some soggy two-door version of the Hyundai Genesis luxury sedan. Instead you'll find a very capable chassis underneath the 2010 Hyundai Genesis Coupe 3.8 Track's arresting bodywork. Hyundai's sport coupe might not be track-ready out of the box, but it doesn't wither when we pitch it into Bathurst-like turns on lumpy two-lane roads.

Hi-Res Videos: *******www.hulu****/edmunds-in side-line MPG is still what you think about when you drive a 2010 Toyota Prius. You can't stop watching the hybrid car's instant fuel economy bar graph. In the 2010 Prius, this graph has moved from the navigation screen to the dash-top instrument panel, so playing the Prius mpg game doesn't force you to take your eyes far from the road ahead. It's fun in a way that Jeff Jarvis, the author of What Would Google Do?, would surely understand.

MORE BMW 750i INSIDELINE.COM: *******www.edmunds****/insideline/do/Drives/FullTests/articleId=143826?tid=edmunds.il.home.photopanel..1.* Just like a kid writing a 10th-grade term paper, the 2009 BMW 750i is just begging to mention the guy who said, "The successful revolutionary is a statesman, the unsuccessful one a criminal." In other words, one man's Thomas Jefferson is another's Guy Fawkes. After being flamed with criticisms of its Bangle-butt styling and infernal iDrive controller, the last-generation BMW 7 Series seemed to be a shoo-in for criminal indictment. When this model was introduced back in 2002, car enthusiasts gathered with pitchforks in hand, carrying effigies of BMW chief designer Chris Bangle and yammering about an honored automotive brand being besmirched by styling blasphemy and misguided technological wizardry. And yet the E65 has sold better than any of the three previous generations of the 7 Series, while both its controversial rear-end styling and iDrive control interface sprouted in copycat form all over the automotive landscape. Whatever you might say, the 2002-'08 BMW 7 Series has been undeniably successful — a revolutionary, not a criminal. But like Thomas Jefferson, revolutionaries must move on and mellow through time. The all-new 2009 BMW 750i does just that, presenting a more enlightened approach to the full-size luxury flagship. The 2009 7 Series is quite simply one of the finest automobiles made today — no pitchforks needed.

Comments Front impact Several of the structures in the dashboard presented a risk of injury to the pelvis, femurs and knees of the driver and passenger. Side impact The Santa Fe scored maximum points for its performance in the side impact test. However, in the pole test, the head-protecting airbag did not fully deploy as intended by Hyundai and the car lost one of the two points available for that test. Child-protection The car was awarded full points for the protection it offered the three year old dummy in the dynamic tests. The passenger airbag can be disabled to allow a rearward-facing child restraint to be used in that seating position. However, information given to the driver regarding the status of the airbag is not sufficiently clear. Inadequate warning is given of the risks of placing a rearward-facing child restraint in the front passenger's seat with the airbag still enabled. The presence of ISOFIX and top-tether anchorages is not clearly marked. Pedestrian protection The Santa Fe scored no points and was awarded no stars for the protection it offered to pedestrians. Manufacturers are offered the opportunity to nominate test zones which they expect will perform better than those tested by Euro NCAP. Hyundai did not nominate any such zones for the Santa Fe.

For the first time you can see video evidence of how wild Kawasaki's new ZX-10R is flat out. Watch the new Kawasaki rev out in top gear as it bounces of its speed limiter and check out how much the bars move as the bike twitches over the bumpy test track. Then watch as it takes on Yamaha's R1, which comes out on top in a simple flat out run. You can read the full test of all this year's 1000cc superbikes in the February 6 edition of MCN.

*******www.edmunds****/insideline/do/Drives/Comparos/articleId=125265 Before you start sending us flaming e-mails complaining that a comparison between the 2008 Audi S5 and the 2008 BMW M3 Coupe is an obvious mismatch from the get-go, you should know a few things. Our first full test of the $53,000, all-wheel-drive 2008 Audi S5 was a bit of a revelation. With a 354-horsepower version of Audi's direct-injection 4.2-liter V8 under its hood, the voluptuous Audi S5 ran a 13.3-second quarter-mile at 104 mph, just 0.1 second and 2 mph shy of the 420-hp 2007 Audi RS4 sedan. What's more, the S5's slalom speed is within a couple mph of the harsh-riding RS-spec sedan. "It ran a 13.3? With that kind of speed, who needs a $67,000 RS4?" we asked ourselves. We believe so strongly in the 2008 Audi S5 that it earned our Inside Line's inaugural Editors' Choice Award. So we acquired (hastily perhaps) another 2008 Audi S5 and set it against the new 2008 BMW M3 Coupe, a car now fortified with V8 power for the first time. Speed-reading the specifications sheets of these two cars, they seem like natural rivals: the 354-hp, all-wheel-drive 2008 Audi S5 measured against the 414-hp, rear-wheel-drive 2008 BMW M3. But as it turns out, we gave the 2008 Audi S5 a bigger challenge than we had initially intended.

FOR THE FULL TEST VIDEO: *******www.edmunds****/insideline/do/Drives/FullTests/articleId=138126 Only about 10 seconds elapse in our drive of the 2009 Porsche 911 Carrera S Cabriolet before we realize that we've just begun a love/hate relationship with Porsche's most brilliant piece of technology in the last 20 years — the Doppelkupplungsgetriebe, which, roughly translated, means "badass tranny." Seriously, Porsche's PDK (Porsche Double Clutch) transmission — a new addition to the 911 model range for 2009 — is as spectacular at changing gears as it is awkward to use. This transmission has won our hearts with ridiculously quick shifts and immediate throttle response, but also doused our spirits with its frustrating interface. Still, once you start winding corners together after adjusting to the shifting characteristics of the PDK, you'll quickly realize that the 2009 Porsche Carrera S Cabriolet's combination of newfound power and a best-of-both-worlds transmission enables it to satisfy the hard-core performance nerd and Newport Ned alike.
