The Heli Industry Seems Better Equipped Than Most To Ride Out The Economy
No one has to tell you that the aviation world is getting clobbered... by the economy, awful press and some truly poor lawmaking. In a world where it seems we have no end of hazards to be wary of, the last thing we needed was a few more. but, then again, we simply persevere.
Most prominent among the aero-survivors at this early point in the eco-debacle, is the helo industry... which seems to be staying fairly healthy despite the miasma that surrounds us. That was particularly evident at the recently concluded HAI Heli-Expo, which ANN attended in Anaheim, California.
Heli-Expo 2009 came to a close in Anaheim on Tuesday, February 24th, with all indicators pointing to a record breaking show, according to the folks at HAI. While a total of 17,373 participates attended the show over all three days last year, Heli-Expo had attracted 17,321 by only the second day this year - with final attendee figures tallying a most positive 17,995.
Five-hundred and eighty-five exhibitors showcased their products and services. Sixty-five helicopters were displayed on the showroom floor. Exhibitor space covered 259,400 net square feet and featured avionics, accessories, components, and related products, all under one roof!
Exhibitors reported high activity at their booths, and vendors were able to interact with thousands of attendees on the floor. HAI committee meetings and educational seminars were well attended, and this year’s Heli-Expo Job Fair was also a success, with 35 employers and more than 550 jobseekers participating. The Heli-Expo job fair allowed jobseekers to meet with employers and discuss opportunities in the international helicopter community.
Following voting for the HAI Board of Directors, the newly elected winners are David Chevalier, CEO of Blue Hawaiian Helicopters; Mark Gibson, Vice President of Timberland Logging; and Torbjorn ("TC") Corell, Chief Pilot of Southern California Edison. The new members of the executive committee of the Board of Directors are Mark Gibson, Chairman; David Chevalier, Vice Chairman; Art Ashton, Treasurer; and Gale Wilson, Assistant Treasurer.
The “Salute to Excellence” Awards Banquet was held Monday night in the Marquis Ballroom at the Anaheim Marriott. The highlight of the banquet was a video paying tribute to award winners, recognizing their outstanding contributions to the international helicopter community.
Heli-Expo 2010 will take place in Houston, Texas February 21-23, 2010. Mark your calendars!

AUSTIN -- David Gale, Executive VP of MTV Networks, who heads up online operations, tells Beet.TV that even a giant media enterprise like MTV needs to seek partners to reach an audience which has become defuse in a maze of social networks.
Daisy Whitney, who conducted several interviews for Beet.TV at SXSW, caught up with David earlier. David told Whitney that during these lean times, innovation is essential.
Here's Daisy's report on developments at MTV in her post on TV Week.
David was at the show to promote MTV's new "Five Dollar Cover" online and television series.
This is the last of Daisy's reporting from SXSW and we are grateful for her help and outstanding interviews, along with the outstanding shooting and production of Jeff Brooks. Much obliged.
Andy Plesser, Executive Producer
Tech Companies Should Buy Media Now
As the dance between big media and technology company continues, could it be that tech companies will acquire media companies, now at historical low values? Erik Sherman at BNET thinks the time is right.

I wrote this song last year but only got around to recording it now.

Softly the night gale sings
Swinging low to leave.
Softly the night time brings
the cool evening breeze.
Softly the waves roll in
Washed against the sand.
Softly the lights grow dim
I'm back where I began.
And all I do,
And all I am,
All I knew as mortal man.
And all I say,
And all I try,
Will wash away with the tide.
Yes, "night gale" is artistic license as well as proper grammar. Look up what "nightingale" means when translated to English.
A look at one of the stunningly beautiful desert's DOWNSIDES. A gentle summer breeze is one thing, a virtual gale that can launch a woman like a javelin, quite another.
This short video is a diving experience that was done by SCUBA Divers out of Dip 'N Dive (www.dipndive.com) in Buffalo, NY.The Dean Richmond was a 238' twin screw steel over wood steamer, built at Cleveland Ohio in 1864. She left Toledo, OH on Friday the 13th, 1893 bound for Buffalo loaded with nearly 200 tons of pig zinc, barrels of flour and other dry goods. The winds were gale force and towering waves were battering the ship, but the Dean pressed on throughout the day, losing both masts and one stack in the process. Both her stacks were down and she was observed rolling in the troughs about 40 miles off Buffalo. A short time after midnight, the Dean Richmond rolled and sank, taking with her the captain, 18 crew members and one unlucky woman.

I am no Gordon Lightfoot but my song Remember the Edmund is a tribute to the Wreck, the Captain and Crew of the Edmund Fitzgerald, launched on June 8, 1958. Until 1971 she was the largest ship on the Great Lakes. Although she had reported having some difficulties during a gale on Lake Superior the Fitzgerald sank suddenly on November 10, 1975 in 535 feet of water without sending any distress signals. The site of the loss is: in Canadian waters approximately 17 miles from the entrance to Whitefish Bay. All 29 hands in the crew perished, presumably by drowning. The incident is the most famous disaster in the history of Great Lakes shipping, and is the subject of Gordon Lightfoots hit song, "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald.
