Launch of the Tanqueray Guild Sees the Top Ten Mixologists From Around the World Create Cocktail Perfection It's a worldwide symbol of sophistication - the martini cocktail. And, any true connoisseur will tell you it needs to be made with gin to be authentic. So, Tanqueray created its No. TEN gin especially to make the perfect martini and then toured the world to find the best bartenders to make it. Now, they're all in London for a two-day festival of glamour to show how each of them interprets one of the world's most famous drinks. They're also building an elite network of artists of taste - the Tanqueray Guild - which will span the globe to promote the principles of luxury. There was a year-long search for the 10 best bartenders from 10 of the world's most glamourous cities (London, Athens, Barcelona, Milan, Paris, New York, Miami, Mexico City, Shanghai and Tokyo). These experts now form the nucleus of the Tanqueray Guild, which launched on Monday 9th June with a dinner hosted at private members' club, Home House in central London. These leaders in their field have all created their own version of the classic gin martini, and will demonstrate them during the two days. Following which, they head back to their home cities to found their own chapters of the Tanqueray Guild. Martinis have been associated with some of the world's greatest figures in all walks of life - from British Prime Minister Sir Winston Churchill (said to favour an ultra-dry version in which he poured gin into a glass and "looked at the bottle of vermouth across the room") through US General George S. Patton, who suggested merely pointing the vermouth bottle in the direction of Italy. The whole extravaganza will be topped off by a spectacular party in London's buzzing Covent Garden. This dramatic event will see the No 1 Piazza turned into a cool, contemporary cocktail bar, where 200 VIP guests will dance to music provided by gin martini aficionado and couture fashion designer, Giles Deacon. Produced for Tanqueray

Gu Kaizhi (traditional Chinese: 顧愷之; simplified Chinese: 顾恺之; pinyin: Gù Kǎizhī; Wade-Giles: Ku K'ai-chih) (ca. 344-406), is a cel Gu Kaizhi (traditional Chinese: 顧愷之; simplified Chinese: 顾恺之; pinyin: Gù Kǎizhī; Wade-Giles: Ku K'ai-chih) (ca. 344-406), is a celebrated painter of ancient China. According to historical records he was born in Wuxi, Jiangsu province and first painted at Nanjing in 364. In 366 he became an officer (Da Sima Canjun, 大司馬參軍). Later he was promoted to royal officer (Sanji Changshi, 散騎常侍). He was also a talented poet and calligrapher. He wrote three books about painting theory: On Painting (畫論), Introduction of Famous Paintings of Wei and Jin Dynasties (魏晉勝流畫贊) and Painting Yuntai Mountain (畫雲台山記). He wrote: "In figure paintings the clothes and the appearances were not very important. The eyes were the spirit and the decisive factor." Gu's art is known today through copies of three silk handscroll paintings attributed to him. "Admonitions of the Instructress to the Palace Ladies女史箴图" This painting - probably a Tang dynasty copy - illustrates nine stories from a political satire about Empress Jia (賈后) written by Zhang Hua (張華 ca. 232-302). Beginning in the eighth century, many collectors and emperors left seals, poems, and comments on the scroll. The Admonitions scroll was stored in the emperor's treasure until it was looted by the British army in the Boxer Uprising in 1900. Now it is in the British Museum collection, missing the first two scenes. Restoration specialists working on the scroll used the wrong materials and caused it to become brittle, so it can only be displayed flat. The original copy is a horizontal handscroll, painted by ink and color on silk.

China (traditional Chinese: 中國; simplified Chinese: 中国; Tongyong Pinyin: Jhongguó; Hanyu Pinyin: Zhōngguó (help·info); Wade-Giles (Mandarin): Chung¹kuo²) is a cultural region, an ancient civilization, and, depending on perspective, a national or multinational entity extending over a large area in East Asia. China has one of the world's oldest people and continuous civilizations, consisting of states and cultures dating back more than six millennia. It has the world's longest continuously used written language system, and is the source of many major inventions, such as what the British scholar and biochemist Joseph Needham called the "four great inventions of Ancient China": paper, the compass, gunpowder, and printing. Historically, China's cultural sphere has extended across East Asia as a whole, with Chinese religion, customs, and writing systems being adopted to varying degrees by neighbors such as Japan, Korea and Vietnam. The last Chinese Civil War has resulted in two political entities using the name China: * the People's Republic of China (PRC), commonly known as China, has control over mainland China, and the largely self-governing territories of Hong Kong (since 1997) and Macau (since 1999). * the Republic of China (ROC), commonly known as Taiwan, has control over the islands of Taiwan, Pescadores, Kinmen, and Matsu.English and many other languages use various forms of the name "China" and the prefix "Sino-" or "Sin-". These forms are thought to derive from the name of the Qin Dynasty that first unified the country (221206 BCE). The pronunciation of "Qin" is similar to the phonetic "cheen", which is considered the possible root of the word "China".China is known as 'Zhōngguó' in Mandarin and pinyin (中國 in traditional chinese or 中国 in simplified chinese). The character zhōng means "middle" or central; the letter, guó, means land, kingdom or country. An appropriate English translation would be "middle kingdom".Ancient China was one of the earliest centers of human civilization. Chinese civilization was also one of the few to invent writing independently, the others being Mesopotamia, the Indus Valley Civilization, the Mayan civilization, the Minoan Civilization of ancient Greece, and Ancient Egypt.
