Comedies, Drama, Animation, a new bar for “mockumentaries” and Brian DePalma may very well have invented a new genre altogether. Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck’s account of a young Dominican pitcher’s experiences in the competitive world of US baseball is a powerful and ambitious follow-up to their startlingly assured feature debut (HALF NELSON). But just as their first film was not your average high school drama, nor is SUGAR even close to being just another American sports movie. Miguel ‘Sugar’ Santos’ (Algenis Perez Soto) realises his opportunity to achieve the American Dream, when he is picked to enter a US rookie academy and given a chance to play in the major league. But thoughts of success, fame and celebrity are thwarted by the reality of his situation. Increasingly isolated, he has to decide whether to continue on the path that is expected of him, or breakout and discover his own place in the world. Featuring a remarkable performance by Algenis Perez Soto, SUGAR is an original and provocative portrait of the modern-day immigrant experience by two of America’s most distinctive young filmmakers.

Check out this exclusive Carbonated.TV interview with the writers and directors of It's Kind of a Funny Story, Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck. The film stars Zach Galifianakis, Keir Gilchrist, Emma Roberts, and many more. In this interview, Anna and Ryan talk about staying in touch with your inner-child, what it's like to be glam rock stars for a day, and how they have top secret plans for the future. It's Kind of a Funny Story hits theaters October 8th. Movie Synopsis: It's Kind of a Funny Story, adapted from Ned Vizzini's 2006 novel of the same name, is the new comedy-drama from acclaimed writer/directors Ryan Fleck & Anna Boden (Half Nelson, Sugar). It's 5:00 A.M. on a Sunday in Brooklyn. Craig Gilner (played by Keir Gilchrist of United States of Tara) is bicycling up to the entrance of a mental health clinic; this bright 16-year-old is stressed out from the demands of being a teenager. Before his parents (Lauren Graham [of Parenthood] and Jim Gaffigan [of Away We Go]) and younger sister are even awake, Craig checks himself into Argenon Hospital and is admitted by a psychiatrist. But the youth ward is temporarily closed -- so he finds himself stuck in the adult ward. One of the patients, Bobby (Zach Galifianakis of The Hangover), soon becomes both Craig's mentor and protégé. Craig is also quickly drawn to another 16-year-old displaced to the adult ward, the sensitive Noelle (Emma Roberts of the upcoming Scream 4), who just might make him forget his longtime unrequited crush Nia (Zoë Kravitz of the upcoming Mad Max). With a minimum five days' stay imposed on him by the adult ward's staff psychiatrist Dr. Eden Minerva (Academy Award nominee Viola Davis), Craig is sustained by friendships on both the inside and the outside as he learns more about life, love, and the pressures of growing up. *******www.carbonated.tv/entertainment/Directors+of+Its+Kind

Cannesin elokuvajuhlilla parhaasta ohjauksesta palkittu DRIVE saa Suomen ensi-iltansa 7.10.2011. Breakout Danish director Nicolas Winding Refn (THE PUSHER Trilogy, BRONSON, VALHALLA RISING) throttles into the Hollywood fast lane with the precision-crafted action caper DRIVE. Ryan Gosling stars as a Los Angeles wheelman for hire, stunt driving for movie productions by day and steering getaway vehicles for armed heists by night. Though a loner by nature, Driver can’t help falling in love with his beautiful neighbor Irene (Carey Mulligan), a vulnerable young mother dragged into a dangerous underworld by the return of her ex-convict husband Standard (Oscar Isaac). After a heist intended to pay off Standard's protection money spins unpredictably out of control, Driver finds himself driving defense for the girl he loves, tailgated by a syndicate of deadly serious criminals (Albert Brooks and Ron Perlman). But when he realizes that the gangsters are after more than the bag of cash in his trunk—that they're coming straight for Irene and her son—Driver is forced to shift gears and go on offense. DRIVE was written by Academy Award® nominee Hossein Amini (THE WINGS OF THE DOVE) and adapted from the eponymous novel by James Sallis. It was produced by Marc Platt, Gigi Pritzker, Michel Litvak, Adam Siegel and John Palermo; executive producers are David Lancaster, Gary Michael Walters, Bill Lischak and Linda McDonough. Cast includes Academy Award® nominees Ryan Gosling (THE NOTEBOOK, HALF NELSON, BLUE VALENTINE) and Carey Mulligan (AN EDUCATION, WALL STREET 2: MONEY NEVER SLEEPS), three-time Emmy® Award winner Bryan Cranston (“Breaking Bad”), Golden Globe® winner Ron Perlman (“Sons of Anarchy”), Emmy® nominee Christina Hendricks (“Mad Men”), Oscar Isaac (BODY OF LIES, ROBIN HOOD) and Academy Award® nominee Albert Brooks (BROADCAST NEWS, “Weeds”).
