“Can we all get along?” (KTTV)
Rodney King made news with that famous line.
Twenty years later this video captured in 1991 and its aftermath - is re-igniting police brutality debates. (Daily Mail)
Now the conversation is a little different – it’s all about change. What’s changed, who’s changed, or has it changed? A San Francisco Chronicle blogger says ... not really.
“The overall message that police send in this day and age of new media is that they are white men who hate black people ... Oscar Grant was killed by a BART police officer two years ago ... police departments need to change.”
But a reporter for KTLA tows the official line -- and says the situation in L.A. HAS changed.
“Outside is now a much different world compared to 1991 when L.A.P.D. officers were caught on tape beating King after he led them on a high speed chase.”
“Current police chief Charlie Beck says his position now answers to the mayor along with civilian oversight in how the department now handles complaints. He believes an incident like this would not happen today.”
“L.A.P.D. training director Luann Pannell says every officer at the academy learns someone is watching their every move.”
So who’s watching? KTLA says anyone with a camera. The Los Angles Times agrees -- saying the ability to capture video is easier than ever.
“Several recent cases show the power of questionable officer behavior going viral on the Web.”
What about King? Has he changed? Many -- like TMZ -- point out King received a citation from police for driving with an expired license the day before the anniversary.
CNN says King’s had several run-ins with the law since the incident but also says he’s a grandfather now, who recently appeared on “Celebrity Rehab.”
The article quotes him as saying... “The trouble that they see me in is a part of my life that I'm working on.”
