Transcript by Newsy**** BY MATTHEW HIBBARD You're watching multisource politics from Newsy Richard Holbrooke, known to many as the ‘hydrogen bomb of diplomacy’ and the ‘bulldozer’ died Monday. This after doctors preformed surgery to repair a torn aorta. CNN looks back at his work and the many administrations he worked under. “Holbrooke went to Vietnam shortly after joining the Foreign Service in 1962. He worked on Vietnam issues for President Johnson, East Asia for President Carter including China when relations with the U.S. were normalized and for President Clinton he took on the Bosnian War.” Holbrooke is perhaps best known for his contributions in brokering the 1995 Dayton Accords - which ended the war in Bosnia. In 2008, he became the U.S. special envoy to Afghanistan and Pakistan. The BBC says his explosive personality was his most defining trait. “He could be infuriating, but he could laugh at himself and he knew there was something absurd about his manner and he took it as well as dulling it out. The people who didn’t get on with him, were the people who didn’t have the confidence to push back and cut through the bluster to the real giant human being underneath.” After serving the Clinton administration, Holbrooke worked as a journalist and an investment banker on Wall Street. But the tough-minded diplomat preferred the situation room to the stock exchange. A writer for The Washington Post says Holbrooke couldn’t keep his hard-edged spirit bottled up. “It was a hopeless task, like trying to bottle lightning. If he saw something that offended or appealed to him, Holbrooke could not keep his mouth shut.” Obama called Holbrooke - quote - “a true giant of American foreign policy who has made America stronger, safer, and more respected.” A writer for The New Yorker says he never stopped working for his county. “He harbored a dose of skepticism about the Afghanistan war, but he worked tirelessly for success, to the obvious detriment of his health. In a sense he gave his life for his country." According to CBS - among Holbrooke’s final words to his Pakistani surgeon: - quote - “You’ve got to end this war in Afghanistan.” His deputy - Frank Ruggiero will serve in his place for the time being. Tsar Bomba (Russian: Царь-бомба) is the nickname for the AN602 hydrogen bomb, the most powerful nuclear weapon ever detonated. Developed by the Soviet Union, the bomb was originally designed to have a yield of about 100 megatons of TNT (420 PJ), but the yield was reduced to 50 megatons in order to reduce nuclear fallout. This attempt was successful, as it was one of the cleanest (relative to its yield) nuclear bombs ever detonated. Only one bomb of this type was ever built and it was tested on October 30, 1961, in the Novaya Zemlya archipelago. *Animated in 3ds Max and finished in After Effects
