This project started from one E-mail from my friend. Hi Takaya I hope that all is well with you. i've been reading your Weissraum reports and feeling very nostalgic for Kyoto. In looking at your reports a thought occurred to me which I thought may interest you. One of my colleagues that I work with here at the university is a very interesting ceramics artist called Chris Powell. He was recently showing me a new body of work which he uses the form of various funnels as the inspiration for small vases. He mentioned that he thought it would be interesting to collaborate with an Ikebana artist, where he would supply the vases and the artist would make arrangements for them. I obviously thought of you and wondered if you would be interested in some kind of exchange. He could mail you a few of these if you were interested to make arrangements and perhaps make a small exhibition. I also thought that the two of you would have many ideas in common as he also makes salt works using dead fish! I thought this could be a good initiative to start as we could use it as a basis to create an exchange between texas and kyoto, from here we can also think about doing some show in texas with you and other japanese artists. I'll attach images here, but let me know what you think. it would be nice to form some exchanges best gavin

April 25, 2009 Early in the morning. It rains. The rain makes small streams. Both my prayer & hope flow away. Time passes. I just think about the rest of my time. my life. April 29. Very clear, very fine day. I visited the friend who lived in Wachi , countryside of Kyoto, about 1hour from my house. He is an artist and also a farmer. And he is the fellow of the dog whose name is VONO. She slightly gains weight from last time I met. It was just before to pull water to his rice field. It is just a season of preparations for rice-transplanting now. There is the field --already filled up with water. There is the field --today draw and flow water. I drink with him from noon. Time passes really fast. The young tree of eucalyptus rustles in wind beside his rice field in his garden. The wind same as the wind that blew now does not blow again. It is the beginnings of very famous poetry by Bashyou Matsuo. Three kinds of translation. The months and days are the travellers of eternity. The years that come and go are also voyagers. Those who float away their lives on ships or who grow old leading horses are forever journeying, and their homes are wherever their travels take them. By Donald Keene The months and days are the wayfarers of a hundred generations, and the years that come and go are also travelers. Those who float all their lives on boats or reach their old age leading a horse by the bit make travel out of each day and inhabit travel. By Hiroaki Sato Moon & sun are passing figures of countless generations, and years coming or going wanderers too. Drifting life away on a boat or meeting age leading a horse by the mouth, each day is a journey and the journey itself home. by Cid Corman and Kamaike Susume The passing days and months are eternal travellers in time. The years that come and go are travellers too. Life itself is a journey; and as for those who spend their days upon the waters in ships and those who grow old leading horses, their very home is the open road. by Dorothy Britton The sun and the moon are eternal voyagers; the years that come and go are travelers too. for those whose lives float away on boats, for those who greet old age with hands clasping the lead ropes of horses, travel is life, travel is home. by Helen Craig McCullough Days and months are the travellers of eternity. So are the years that pass by. Those who steer a boat across the sea, or drive a horse over the earth till they succumb to the weight of years, spend every minute of their lives travelling. by Nobuyuki Yuasa
