Monday, August 11, 2008 DoubleClick Powers NBC Olympics Online Ad Insertion......No Overlay Ads Permitted by the IOC For those of us who don't like to see overlay ads pop up or stream while watching video, you won't see any on the NBC Olympics coverage on MSN. That's a mandate from the International Olympic Committee, which keeps tight control of the way the Games are presented. Microsoft's Eric Schmidt is one of the key executives in the MSN/NBC Sports joint effort for online coverage of the Olympics in the United States. He came by the Beet.TV studios on Friday to fill us in on various technical and advertising-related topics around the Olympics. The ad formats are much like on television, with pre-roll ads and in-stream ads inserted between pauses in events. All the ad inventory is managed by Google's DoubleClick. This is the first insertion of DoubleClick ads into Silverlight, the new Microsoft rich-media platform. The vast majority of online video viewers are watching pre-roll and overlay ads, a study released today by Break Media and Panache shows. Completion rates for 15-second pre-roll ads were 87 percent, and 77 percent viewed campaigns with overlay ads for at least 15 seconds. Break Media used Break****'s monthly audience of 17 million 18-34-year old men as guinea pigs for the 11-week study, and advertisers Honda, T-Mobile, and truTV ran the test campaigns. The three advertisers chosen represent a cross-section of the different brands on the web, hopefully making the study results relevant to an even broader array of advertisers, Break Media CEO Keith Richman says. Panache, a video advertising delivery platform, placed the ads and supplied the technology to measure engagement. The study tested the success of the four standard formats for in-stream video advertising established by the Interactive Advertising Bureau in May: pre-roll, interactive pre-roll, non-overlay ads and overlay ads. The study demonstrated that all of the ads are effective and have different value for the advertisers, Panache president Steve Robinson says. --Kelsey Blodget, Associate Producer Update: Tremor Media announced today that 80 percent of its viewers are completing 15 and 30 second pre-roll ads. We know that many of the big newspaper publishers are expanding video offerings but most are not yet successful in selling ads in or around their clips. But are in-stream ads the total value proposition of video? Adam Berry, VP of Brightcove, who speaks in this clip from the Beet.TV Online Video Roundtable, begs to differ. He says that video is an essential part of a successful web site and the greater value is the ultimate success of the site and the value of its audience. Good video makes for a better site. Amen. Perhaps a corolary would be newspapers using photography to make a richer experience, but not selling ads on the photo? After all, video production costs have become close to still photography for some publishers who are using inexpensive video cameras. Another Win for Brighcove with CondeNet Today, Brightcove announced an agreement with CondeNet to provide video services for its properties. The company has been on a roll lately with recent deals. Video Has Value to Marketers Beyond the Pre-Roll, Execs Say For marketers, the value of online video is not necessarily in-stream ads either, as is pointed out in the conversation by Bud Rosenthal, the CEO of TurnHere, the producer/syndicator of informational videos created for corporate clients. Bud makes his comments in the beginning of this segment. Shoba Purushothaman, CEO of the NewsMarket, a company which distributes corporate videos, makes a similar point. Online video is a powerful tool for marketers -- and getting the point across with information vs. conventional advertising can work very well.
