BY WEI GAO Hurricane Irene could make the shortest FedEx playoff on record. The PGA Tour announced The Barclays -- the first of four tournaments in the FedExCup Playoff -- will be shortened from a 72-hole event to 54 holes due to the impending threat of hurricane Irene. For the record, Harrison Frazar is leading the Barclays -- but the only name anyone was saying was Irene PGA Tour tournament director Slugger White tells USA Today... "Sunday obviously is not going to be here. We are looking upwards to maybe 10 to 12 inches of rain between Saturday night and Sunday evening, and that puts Monday out and Tuesday out, as well," "If we don't get 18 in (Saturday), we will resort back to 36 holes, and the FedEx points would go to that. They would be spread there and sent to Boston.” Golf events are notoriously subject to whimsical weather. Ferocious weather has been causing big damage in the PGA Tour during last decade. PGATOUR:"Mother nature...ouch...that was just behind our screen." Eugene Oregon’s Register Guard reports...Hurricane Irene talk has dampened the Barclays’ start before the event- or the hurricane- even got started... “Whatever enthusiasm there was for start of the FedEx Cup playoffs was dampened Thursday — first by rain that halted the first round for nearly three hours, then from the gloomy forecast of Hurricane Irene. That left players and officials wonder when, how or even if they can finish the opening playoff event.” With the decision to shorten the event, some- like Golf Week, say the hurricane has already done its damage. Check out their headline..... “PGA Tour officials have thrown in the towel. Hurricane Irene wins.” Others say -- predicting the Barclay’s is like predicting Irene’s path. It’s hard to say. The New York Daily News quotes the man atop the leader board. "We haven't been told of any plans,There (are) right now nothing but rumors. But I think the last thing that we want is to have a cancellation of the tournament." Especially if you’re in Frazar’s position. PGA officials will wait into the weekend -- before making a final decision.

BY ERICA COGHILL Irene versus the Big Apple… The city’s preparing for the showdown… but just how much of a fight is Irene really going to put up when she hits NYC on Sunday? The first hurricane to hit the East Coast in 7 years, “Based on the latest forecast, it will be a category 1 storm, let me remind you that this kind of forecast is very imprecise and we are talking about something that is a long time away in meteorological terms.” But, a meteorologist tells NBCNewYork that Irene could actually be more like an upper category 1 or even category 2…and he doesn’t expect her to weaken. “One of the things I looked at was the sea surface temperatures that were 3 to 6 degrees Fahrenheit above normal, normally the hurricanes, as they come through, they weaken a bit, this is not going to weaken because the sea surface temperatures are warmer and that’s exactly what fuels the hurricanes, is warm ocean temperatures, and also, we have a lot of fast movement of the storm so it’s not going to have a lot of time to weaken before it gets here.” But Bloomberg reported a different prediction… “It will weaken as it moves closer to New York City.” New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg will put the city that never sleeps to bed when he shuts down the subway and bus system from Saturday afternoon until Monday. With parts of Manhattan just a few feet above water, CNN says even if New York City is spared a direct hit, it will still have massive flooding. “Consider this simulation, done by NOAA, showing what a category 2 hurricane could do to a tunnel linking Brooklyn and Manhattan, Donald Cresitello, with the Army Corps of Engineers mapped out some worst case scenarios, a category 1 hurricane, for example, could flood the subway station at the southern tip of Manhattan with three and a half feet of water, a category 2 storm, he says, could put JFK Airport under 5 feet of water.”49-1:15 Now that’s one of the worse case scenarios, and as far as being optimistic goes…CNBC has some less frightening news… “The best case scenario is for the jet stream to kick this thing out to sea and we’re on the west side, which if there’s any such thing as a better side of a hurricane, because the winds are actually moving against the flow of traffic, so if you think about a baseball pitcher throwing a hundred miles per hour, but he’s in a car moving twenty miles per hour, which is the speed of this storm, it’s coming at you at 120, so we would still get a lot of wind, a lot of rain.) But according to CBS news, it doesn’t matter the severity of the storm….there will still be serious damage. “Every 75 years New York gets a major hurricane, it doesn’t take a major hurricane to do major damage.” Transcript by Newsy.

WRITTEN BY: KYLIE MCGIVERN Hurricane Irene prompted the evacuation of more than 2 million people. Millions are left without power and the latest reports say at least 13 people are dead. But among the swirling headlines, you can find Glenn Beck’s name - calling the devastating storm quote- “a blessing.” Here’s a clip from his Friday radio broadcast: “Food storage. Be prepared. Be somebody that can help others. You’ve heard me say this for years. People have made fun of me - that’s fine, I don’t care. I’ve been telling you, ‘Don’t be in a panic situation.’ If you’ve waited, this hurricane is a blessing. It is a blessing. It is God reminding you, as was the earthquake last week, it’s God reminding you, ‘You’re not in control.’” You may not be in control, but the conservative radio host is making sure to control the message he’s sending. A Washington Post blogger writes -- Beck’s call is less about actual preparation, and more about pushing his religious views. “Beck, one of Mormonism’s most famous converts, is actually touting one of the unique aspects of the Latter-day Saint faith: food storage... the command to ‘organize and establish a storehouse,’ which Mormon leaders have interpreted as a requirement to, when possible, ‘store and save a one-year supply of food.’” Beyond sending religious messages through the airwaves, a blogger for Manolith says - don’t be fooled. The bottom line -- is money. “ encouraged people to hoard food. Glenn wants you to be a paranoid family on the block, so you’ll be more susceptible to buying his products.” A blogger for Technorati points out -- if you go to foodinsurance**** you can find a picture of Glenn Beck, recommending the website. The company sells survival kits of freeze dried food designed to last months. The blogger continues.. “...the evidence is growing to suggest that the business of Glenn Beck is fear. Not just any fear, but an apocalyptic fear. A fear that is so great that your senses and your checkbook are helpless when faced with the persuasive words of Mr. Glenn Beck.” Finally, a Gather blogger forecasts-- there’s really no weight in Beck’s words. “As much as the Conservative Christian TV commentator turned Mormon tries to have his messages resonate to the masses, he is considered among other things, a ‘wolf in sheep's clothing.’”

Sweetness but also character, quality and interpretative skills, suppleness and professional approach to various musical styles: these are Irene’s major features. And that’s what has convinced maestro Fulvio Pietramala to compose a song exclusively for her: What you need is more, a track which evokes the atmospheres of faraway ballads, with lyrics which urge us to think about our yearning to always get the most out of our career, our ambitions, wishes, without ever stopping to think that what we really need is something else... something more...
