Reunited and it feels so good. Or does it? Former American Idol adversaries Simon Cowell and Paula Abdul reportedly plan to steam up the small screen for a second time. E! News explains.
“Word is Simon has his heart set on casting his former A.I. partner as a judge on the American version of The X Factor ... British singer Cheryl Cole is also reportedly in talks to join the panel, alongside confirmed judge L.A. Reid.”
After getting the boot from American Idol and bombing with her own dance show on CBS, Clevver Music urges Abdul to take the job.
“Now apparently Abdul’s contract hasn’t been negotiated yet, but, c’mon, she’d be pretty much stupid to say no to an opportunity like this one.”
And a blogger for Exec Digital argues Abdul’s needed to balance out the two unknowns joining Simon at the judges’ table.
“Even without L.A. Reid and Cheryl Cole, the unique partnership between Simon Cowell and Paula Abdul is going to get people to watch. It was obvious from the moment Paula Abdul was thrown out of Fox’s ‘American Idol’ that Simon wanted her back, and now with his own show, he’s going to get just that.”
So it’s probably good for ratings, but what about for the show’s contestants? Deadline’s Nikki Finke questions Cowell’s choices, wondering if Simon can even create a superstar with less-than-stellar mentors.
“But will Cowell with this panel that’s more of a ‘ZZZZZZ Factor’ than The X Factor? Cowell has been stung by the impression left by many media outlets that celebrities are refusing his offers to be a judge.”
After losing Jennifer Lopez to Idol, and Cee-Lo Green to The Voice, a blogger for Holy Moly suggests Cowell still didn’t find the right mix.
“But Cheryl Cole... hmmmm ... sorry Simon - I don't get it … In the states she'll be judged on her merits as a reality show judge, but without the stateside credentials that see Paula Abdul given her wildcard ‘joke’ entry as a judge. Paula was always the worst/best thing about American Idol depending on your perspective, but may feel as though she's no longer Simon's foil with [Cole] wedged in between them.”
And in what some are calling a last resort to create buzz, Cowell announced Mariah Carey will join The X Factor in a “limited capacity.” But the always outspoken Wendy Williams wonders, why not just make her a judge?
“And I gotta tell you, Mariah Carey- you get her in the right space, she’s gonna bring all the coo-coo crazy. Not as glamorous as Jennifer Lopez, but she’s kitschy, and that’s why I like about Mariah Carey ... She’s cute enough, and just messy enough. Right you guys? Messy.
Fox plans to announce the official judging line-up at its upfront presentation next month.
