CBS War Correspondent Lara Logan is back in the U.S. recovering from a brutal attack while covering the celebrations of Hosni Mubarak’s resignation.
According to the network, Logan was separated from the rest of her crew and was then brutally beaten and sexually assaulted during the celebrations. A group of Egyptian women and soldiers reportedly saved her. Logan was later reunited with her crew and flown back to the United States to be treated in a Washington, D.C. hospital. (Video from: WACH)
The attack has sparked discussion around the world about the safety of foreign correspondents in war zones and other unsafe confines. ITN News reports this was not an isolated incident.
“According to Media Watchdog, a committee to protect journalists, at least 52 journalists were attacked and 76 imprisoned during the unrest in Egypt that lead Mubarak to step down after 30 years in power.”
The incident has sparked debate over the safety in women in war zones. CNN’s Kiran Chetry spoke with Columbia University Journalism Professor and former foreign correspondent Judith Matloff. The two women journalists discuss the dangers of their profession.
“I think if you will sit down with a bunch of female foreign correspondents who cover conflict over the bar in the evening, most of them will probably tell you this is a woman’s worst nightmare. I mean, I’ve had colleagues who have gone as far as to say that they’d rather be killed than have something like this happen.”
A columnist for The Washington Post points out that says violence against women in Egypt is a an near daily occurrence.
“This sort of story has a pernicious staying power: Not a faceless statistic, but a known, blonde, white woman. Fortunately or unfortunately, these are the stories that linger … In 2008, as Slate reporter Sarah Topol noted, a study by the Egyptian Centre for Women's Rights reported that 83 percent of women experienced harassment - and that 98 percent of foreign women visitors did.”
Not everyone thinks Logan deserves sympathy. NYU fellow Nir Rosen caused outrage in the Twittersphere for comments he made about Logan.
"I'm rolling my eyes at all the attention she'll get."
“lara logan had to outdo anderson [Cooper]...”
“...at a moment when she is going to become a martyr and glorified we should at least remember her role as a major war monger.”
Nir Rosen offered his resignation Wednesday morning. Salon’s Mary Elizabeth Williams notes, it would be easy to paint broad strokes as to “why” this happened, saying that would be a mistake.
“She was assaulted doing her job. It was a crime of unspeakable violence. And your opinion of how she does that job, the religion her assailants share with a few million other people, or the color of her hair had nothing to do with it.”
KATU News in Portland revisits an interview CNN had with Logan which shows she was fully aware of the risks of her job.
Anchor: “Why do you subject yourself to these risks?”
Logan: “I’m absolutely committed to this. I see this as my responsibility that if you’re going to send soldiers to war in other people’s lands, you have responsibility for the people of this country and the people around the world.”
The network says, she is now recovering at home with her family.

A horrific crime has torn apart the small town of Cleveland, Texas. Police arrested 18 men - all suspects in the gang rape of an 11-year-old girl.
Investigators say the men raped the middle school student in November in this abandoned trailer- but word didn’t get out until cell phone video of the attack went viral at the local school.
News outlets describe the crime as “nightmarish”, “sickening,” and “sad.”
KHOU REPORTER: “Those who stand accused in this unspeakable crime are men and schoolboys.”
But as details about the attack emerge- some in the media struggle to report accusations that somehow, the victim was to blame.
One blogger for Dreamin’ Demon writes...
“Several students say … the girl was not forced to have sex with the men and that she consented, arguing that she looked well over 11. But her mother states that everyone knew the girl’s age. Which very well may be true, but according to the 11-year-old’s … Facebook, she also loves drinking, smoking and sex.”
Others argue- blaming the child is inconceivable. CNN’s Brooke Baldwin talked with a reporter for the Houston Chronicle who says - a defense attorney for a few of the accused men is trying to demonize the victim.
CINDY HORSWELL, HOUSTON CHRONICLE SENIOR WRITER: “He said the little girl was not, it wasn’t like she is totally completely innocent in this case. It wasn’t like she was kidnapped or something. Whether he was indicating that she might be a willing participant.”
BROOKE BALDWIN, CNN NEWSROOM ANCHOR: “Yeah, at age 11, as you point out, an 11-year-old cannot give legally give consent!”
Some media outlets are under fire for mentioning anything that would somehow imply the child is at fault.. The New York Times caught slack from media critics for publishing...
“Residents ... said she dressed older than her age, wearing makeup and fashions more appropriate to a woman in her 20s. She would hang out with teenage boys at a playground, some said.”
That fired up Salon’s Mary Elizabeth Williams - who called the piece “sloppy and slanted”.
“...how sickening that once again, when a female is brutally and inhumanely attacked, the issue of what her multiple assailants apparently did somehow pales next to the curiosity over what she must have done to provoke it.”
And Emily Long adds in The Lamp - the Times article is just one instance of unbalanced coverage of sexual assault.
“...my real issue as far as this article is concerned has to do with the reporting, which in my opinion falls short of responsible. Media have a long history of covering sexual and domestic assault stories in this way. It is a habit which is unacceptable, but it is nonetheless a habit which must be broken.”
The 18 men suspected in the gang rape are between the ages of 14 and 27. The Daily Mail reports- 10 others may have been involved.

Performing "Mary Elizabeth Winstead."
Meet charming and jobless Scott Pilgrim (Michael Cera). A bass guitarist for garage band Sex Bob—omb, the 22—year—old has just met the girl of his dreams...literally. The only catch to winning Ramona Flowers (Mary Elizabeth Winstead)? Her seven evil exes are coming to kill him. Genre—smashing filmmaker Edgar Wright (Hot Fuzz, Shaun of the Dead) tells the amazing story of one romantic slacker’s quest to power up with love in Scott Pilgrim vs. the World. Scott Pilgrim has never had a problem getting a girlfriend. It’s getting rid of them that proves difficult. From the girl who kicked his heart’s ass—and now is back in town—to the teenage distraction he’s trying to shake when Ramona rollerblades into his world, love hasn’t been easy. He soon discovers, however, his new crush has the most unusual baggage of all: a nefarious league of exes controls her love life and will do whatever it takes to eliminate him as a suitor. As Scott gets closer to Ramona, he must face an increasingly vicious rogues’ gallery from her past—from infamous skateboarders to vegan rock stars and fearsome identical twins. And if he hopes to win his true love, he must vanquish them all before it really is game over.
Lauryn is a girl from small-town Indiana who moves to Chicago with dreams of entering the Chicago School of Music and Dance. But after rejection and a series of misfortunes she finds herself working in a burlesque club. The club proves to be a place of conflict and self-discovery, helping Lauryn to realize that even though plans may change, dreams never do. From the writer of Save the Last Dance and Step Up and starring Mary Elizabeth Winstead (Death Proof, Die Hard 4.0) Make It Happen is the uplifting story of how hard work and determination can make any dream come true.

this assured, nuanced debut feature tells the story of Olive, who, after her father is diagnosed with alzheimer’s, decides she’s in a hurry to have a baby. Her husband dax, however, is dead set against it. so she takes matters into her own hands, putting their happy marriage at risk.
THE WORLD.
Mary Elizabeth Winstead talks about how the process of filming 'Smashed' to the screening at the Sundance Film Festival has been one big emotional roller coaster for her.
Ansonsten heißt es wirklich: Game over.
