December 2006 (Medialink) -- The deadline is looming for seniors to take action about their Medicare prescription drug plans. Open enrollment for 2007 coverage ends December 31. Medicare beneficiaries who have not yet signed up for the drug benefit can do so, and current enrollees can change to a new drug plan if they find one that better suits their needs. This PSA features former Senator John Breaux advising seniors about Medicare. For more information, call 1-800-MEDICARE or go to www.medicare.gov. This video is provided courtesy of the Medicare Rx Education Network. The Medicare Rx Education Network is a non-partisan coalition of 83 major national organizations (including AARP and the AMA) who have come together to educate Medicare beneficiaries about the Part D prescription drug benefit. The Network is chaired by former Senator John Breaux. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Produced for the Medicare Rx Education Network

Three million seniors could lose their Medicare Advantage coverage, while millions more would face benefit cuts and higher out-of-pocket health care costs under legislation passed today by the U.S. House of Representatives. Noting that 49 percent of Medicare Advantage beneficiaries have incomes of less than $20,000 per year, Karen Ignagni, President and CEO of America's Health Insurance Plans (AHIP), said the legislation would have a devastating impact on seniors' health security. "The House bill shreds the safety net for millions of seniors who depend on Medicare Advantage," said Ignagni. In testimony before the Ways and Means Committee last week, Peter Orszag, Director of the non-partisan Congressional Budget Office, said that Medicare Advantage enrollment would fall by 33 percent under the legislation passed today by the House.

Last year, Dr. Bootman co-chaired an IOM committee that recommended that all physicians begin using e-prescribing by 2010 to help reduce the estimated 1.5 million preventable medication errors that occur in the United States annually. Unfortunately, fewer than one-in-ten physicians currently use life-saving e-prescribing technology.
