The University of Southern California Medical Center is on the defensive after a medical mix-up put the wrong donated kidney into a transplant patient.
“USC University Hospital says the error occurred when two donor kidneys arrived at the same time.”
“We know now that three weeks ago for a kidney transplant there was a mix-up, something USC called a process error."
“Doctors put a kidney in the wrong patient? Local media in Los Angeles reporting a transplant patient at USC University Hospital survived after getting the wrong kidney.”
KABC explains the mistake...
“There were two patients in the operating room awaiting the same general type of kidney, O Universal, unfortunately the kidney destined for Kidney A was transplanted into Patient B.”
ABC News explains how the two mixed up organs are, so far, keeping the two receiving patients alive.
“The kidney which was transplanted... was apparently a close enough match to avoid harming its unintended recipient -- a coincidence that experts say was lucky.”
They go on to say...
“The intended recipient of the misplaced kidney received another organ a few days later...another fortunate coincidence.”
After the incident, the USC Medical Center temporarily shut down its transplant program. Fox News reports an error of magnitude will likely lead to more changes.
“There could also be some policy changes. Back in 2003 Duke Medical Center gave a 17-year-old girl named Jessica Santillan the wrong heart and lungs, she died. That’s the reason why today we have ID numbers on the organs and the patients, and they are suppose to match up.”
LA’s CW-affiliate KTLA looks at what the hospital is doing for patients while the fate of the transplant program is being determined.
“More than 500 patients are on a kidney wait-list at USC. The hospital will help them get on wait lists at other facilities if that’s there choice.”
...and LA’s ABC-affiliate KABC spoke with a woman on USC’s said kidney transplant list...
“It’s actually panic and frustration cause you’re thinking I’ll have to go to another hospital, will I have to go to another hospital? I’ll have to start the whole evaluation again and it’s time consuming.”
As Forbes magazine reports this is “the kind of headline that keeps hospital administrators up at night.
