With the Angels top starters John Lackey and Kelvim Escobar starting the season on the DL pitchers like Ervin Santana will have to step up and give the Angels quality starts and burn innings to preserve the Angels ragged bullpen. To his credit Escobar pitched 6 solid innings in both of his starts and sports an ERA of 3.00 and earned a rare road win against Minnesota in his first start. But Santana had a horrible road campaign last season going 1-10 with an ERA of 8.38. The Rangers had to scramble there pitching staff after a rain out forced a doubleheader on Wednesday and reliever Jamey Wright will get the start. Wright went 2-0 versus the Angels last season in 13 innings pitched giving up only 2 runs and 8 hits in 1 start and 3 appearances against the Halos. Texas got to the Angels pitching staff last week putting up 22 runs in their 3 game series. I need more than 1 game to be convinced that Santana can win on the road and I will take Texas at +105.

Tony T Breaks down the March Madness NCAA Tournament and offers 16 NCAA Tournament Day 1 selections on this edition of Tony T' Sports Bets airing now on *******www.GamblersTelevision****. All eyes will be on freshman OJ Mayo and Michael Beasley but which freshman will get the most support from teammates?? We need to look at the team surrounding each player and right now USC is playing better team basketball and team defense than Kansas St. Kansas St has fallen off form since beating Kansas over a month ago. Kansas St are losers of 5 of their last 7 and allowing teams to shoot at high percentage. OJ Mayo isn’t all of USC’s offense and Michael Beasley is for the Wildcats. Beasley put up 44 against Baylor and 39 against Kansas all resulting in losses. What does that say about the team surrounding him?? Which team in the Pac 10 allows the lowest shooting percentage to their opponents?? I am sure many will guess Stanford, UCLA and Washington St and no one would guess USC. That’s right, USC allows only 39.1% shooting making them the best defense team in the Pac 10. That says a lot about Tim Floyd as head coach with a freshman superstar OJ Mayo on his team battling the Arizona’s, Washington St’s, Stanford’s, Oregon’s and UCLA’s 2 to 3 times this season. UCLA did not get to 40% shooting in three meetings this season. I will take Tim Floyd against a 1-man team. Enough, Take USC –2.5. USC is the absolute NUTS and my best play on Thursday. Selection: USC –2.5

Johan Santana dropped a decision last Saturday in his first home start as a Met against the Brewers as he surrendered three home runs to Milwaukee hitters in defeat. Santana has been solid this season striking out 18, walking 4 and allowing just under 1 base runner per innings pitched. The Mets broke a 9 game losing streak against the Phillies by taking the last 2 at home in their series last week. Cole Hamels has been good this season, as the left-hander has given up only 2 earned runs 22 innings pitched this season. Hamels pitched well in 2 lifetime starts against the Mets at Shea. Both pitchers are in good form and don't allow baserunners. I am going to play this one under 8 ½ runs.

The Red Sox bats have woke up, as Boston is team batting averaged reached .285 heading into Thursday's action. Jon Lester has struggled on the mound with his control as he has walked 15 batters in 20 1/3rd's innings pitched this season. Lester only averages about 5 1/3rd innings per appearance this season and the Red Sox bullpen has not been good this season with a 5.57 ERA. The Rangers are in a rebuilding year and in last in the American League West. Jennings has gotten pounded this season sporting an ERA of 8.79 in three starts this season. Jennings last season with Houston had an ERA of 6.79 in 18 starts as teams hit .300 against him. Teams are batting .311 this season so far so the switch to the American League has not gone well for Jennings. Jennings is coming off major elbow surgery last season and is trying to find his form of years past. Both offenses are salivating at the thoughts of facing these two struggling pitchers. Play over 11 runs.

Jake Peavy is off to a great start this season. Peavy in 2 starts this season has given up 1 run and 5 hits with 12 strikeouts. Peavy allowed 1 run over 9 innings in his last start last Saturday against the Dodgers. Peavy has pitched very well against the Dodgers over his career. There was a little controversy following Peavy’s start against the Dodgers as his hands were dirty and some speculated Peavy was applying pine tar to the baseball. Padre manager Bud Black claimed it was from dirt and from the rosen bag and not pine tar and not much transpired afterwards so it was put to rest. Peavy could be on his way to his second straight Cy Young award. Brad Penny pitched well in his first start at home this season limiting the Giants to 4 hits and no ones over 6 2/3rd innings. Penny had a great 2007 at home as in 19 starts he sported an ERA just over 3. The Padre bats were ice cold at San Francisco and this one will go under like we had it when these two pitchers met on Saturday. Play Under 6 ½ runs.
