Jim Lobe: The origin of the Zionist, Neocon, Christian Right alliance (1 of 2)
Washington's neocons are alive and well and are advising both John McCain and President Bush. Now many are saying Bush should permit Israel to attack Iran's nuclear facilities but a new report says the whole plan could backfire.

The Problem by J.J. Cale. Hail King Bush
Bush and his neocon cronies are LIEING!!!!
I like the Senator's stance on burping, but his flatulence policy sounds like typical Neocon rhetoric.
Mommy, I'm Scared Of The Government! George Bush has had his brain surgically implanted in John McCain's head. We The People will have 4 more years of war, tax breaks for the rich, contempt for our allies (the ones who don't desert us), high unemployment, Recession and Rice is now eaten only by those who have a Ration Card and enough money to buy gas at $4 dollars a gallon to go get the Rationed Rice. On Sunday we have a choice of Republican Reverends Neocon Race Baiter Rod Parsley, gay, lesbian & feminist hater Jerry Falwell, Catholic Church and gay hater John Hagee.. Mommy, I'm scared of the government!
In the video here, taped at the Campus Progress journalism conference earlier this month, the Pulitzer-Prize winning journalist Seymour Hersh reveals how the neocons convened around Dick Cheney and brainstormed ways to kick off World War IV, as they fondly call their pet project to take out the Muslims and foment a contrived “clash of civilizations.”

It’s been two years since President Barack Obama signed the executive orders to shut down the United States detention camp at Guantanamo Bay --
PRES. BARACK OBAMA, JANUARY 2009: “We then provide the process whereby Guantanamo will be closed no later than one year from now.” (The New York Times)
-- but the doors to the controversial base remain open, and it doesn’t look like they’ll be closing anytime soon.
The New York Times reports Defense Secretary Robert Gates is dropping some heavy hints about lifting the 2009 ban on military commissions to prosecute Gitmo detainees --
-- putting Obama and his lost promises at the center of a storm of criticism -- and uncovering some unexpected support.
While the Obama administration has not shut down the detention camp as promised, its population has been reduced. C-SPAN lays out the current picture.
“779 people have been detained, 559 detainees have been transferred, 174 remain in the facility, and 6 detainees have died while in custody.”
Congress has been adamant about its opposition to Gitmo’s closure -- even going so far as to make it nearly impossible to transfer detainees to U.S. soil, as Mr. Obama once suggested. But a writer for AntiWar.com says, that doesn’t let the president off the hook.
“...the notion that innocent people could be detained eternally simply because Congress didn’t like the idea of letting them go is nonsense. President Obama is clearly complicit in keeping the facility going, and his feigned interest in closing it is only ... giving the false impression that any such effort is ongoing.”
But renewed Gitmo attention may be the last thing President Obama needs as 2012 draws closer. On RT’s Alyona Show, a guest from The Young Turks voices her frustration -- painting the picture of an alienated liberal base.
ANA KASPARIAN: “It does make me sick to my stomach because, if I could recall, back in 2008 when I voted for Obama, I voted for a progressive, I voted for a liberal -- I did not vote for a neocon, and a lot of his foreign policy stances are looking more and more like the Bush administration’s. He’s looking like a neocon.”
An opinion piece from the Brookings Institute says Obama has let the issue get out of his control -- and if he isn’t keeping old promises, he needs to articulate a new road forward.
“...he should stop pretending … Obama badly needs to change the conversation about Guantanamo. If he is going to be stuck with it, he might as well make it his own.”
The writer goes on to explain - the Gitmo of today isn’t what it was under the Bush administration. Detainees have access to lawyers and are frequently visited by journalists -- and he says Obama should use the new face of Guantanamo to move forward.
Meanwhile, former Vice President Dick Cheney went on NBC’s TODAY Show to -- wait for it -- support the Democratic Commander-in-Chief.
DICK CHENEY: “He obviously has been through the fires of becoming President and having to make decisions and live with the consequences... I think he's learned that what we did was far more appropriate than he ever gave us credit for.”
So what do you think? Has President Obama backpedaled too far, or is he simply responding to the security needs of the United States?
