It might come as no surprise Nintendo’s newest handheld - The Nintendo 3DS - quickly flew off shelves, selling out within less than 24 hours of its release.
According to Nikkei News, Nintendo shipped 400,000 units of the 3DS for the highly anticipated launch. While most were made available through pre-order only, some Japanese retailers offered in-store sales, which drew massive crowds.
(According to the blog Andriasang - ) “[One] shop had a line of 200 by midnight, growing to between 500 and 600 by 7:45. As reported at various Japanese sites, the shop had 1,000 units for same day sales... By 9:30, clerks were announcing that the system was sold out.”
Several reports said the handheld had all but sold out by noon, with all units officially sold by the end of the day. A writer for gaming blog Joystiq sarcastically says this is no surprise.
“Who would have thought that there'd be more than 400,000 tech-savvy Nintendo acolytes that lived in Japan? (Us. We would have thought that. As would everyone else.) … a number of Japanese tech retailers reportedly received another shipment of 3DS... Which ... probably already sold out by now.”
But despite stellar sales, the newest member of the Nintendo family is already giving cause for concern - with several users reporting eye soreness during play. Nintendo has warned the system should not be played in 3D for more than 30 minutes, and to take periodic breaks. A writer for Kotaku says, while it doesn’t melt your eyes, the 3D effect is still a bit of a strain.
“My first couple of hours … were spent with the 3D slider effect at full blast. Any time, I slightly moved the 3DS, the sweetspot was gone, and I was left with a blur of images and my brain trying to make sense of what I was looking at. It became a bit too much — difficult to process even.”
And if that’s not enough to concern Nintendo’s top execs, several online outlets are now reporting hackers are already having their way with the system - only a day after the launch.
“...the fact that it's already been modded ... surely means that copied 3DS games could be on the agenda. It'll also no doubt mean that Nintendo will be rushing … to combat the loophole that the hackers used.”
Nintendo expects to sell 4 million units of the 3DS by the end of its fiscal year, March 31. The company anticipates 1.5 million of those sales to come from Japan alone. The 3DS is slated for its U.S. debut sometime at the end of March.
