Historical Background: The earliest known rendition of "Bingo" was published in 1888, with significantly different lyrics than the version most commonly sung today. This version was printed in "In praise of ale: or, Songs, ballads, epigrams, & anecdotes relating to beer, malt, and hops; with some curious particulars concerning ale-wives and brewers, drinking-clubs and customs" by W. T. Marchant as a drinking game. In 1894, English folklorist Alice Bertha Gomme recorded eight different version of the rhyme. The modern form of the song incorporates a dog named Bingo, replacing the letters of its name with claps after each verse of the song. Historical Background: "London Bridge" is reputedly written in reference to King Henry VIII of England (1491 -- 1547) and his second wife, Anne Boleyn, the mother of Queen Elizabeth I. The earliest version of the rhyme appears in "Tommy Thumb's Pretty Song Book," published around 1744, titled "London Bridge Is Broken Down." In this early text, "Lady Lee" is supposedly Lady Margaret Wyatt, a childhood friend of Anne, and eventually her faithful lady-in-waiting. The victim of a conspiracy among Henry's advisors, Anne Boleyn was falsely convicted of adultery and high treason and consequently executed; the lyrics of rhyme are said to document her rise and fall. Though destroyed and rebuilt many times (most recently in 1973), the London Bridge was first constructed by the Romans in 50 AD, and remains one of the most famous landmarks in London to this day. Historical Background: "Pussy-Cat, Pussy-Cat" dates back to the sixteenth century during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I, the fifth and last monarch of Tudor England. It is said that one of the Queen's ladies in waiting owned a cat who wandered about Windsor Castle. One day, the cat brushed by the Queen's foot and frightened her. The Queen continued to allow the cat to roam about as long as she kept the throne room free of mice. It is suggested that the rhyme was brought to America by German immigrants and emerged in New York in 1883 in its modern form. In the United Kingdom, the rhyme is known as "The Farmer's In His Den," with "hi-ho the derryo" varyingly substituted with "ee-i, tiddly-i," "eei-i andio," and "ee-i, ee-i." "The Farmer in the Dell" can also be sang as a game, in which the players form a circle holding hands around "the farmer," singing the first verse while walking around in a circle. When the verse is over, everyone stops and the farmer chooses his wife. The wife joins him in the center for her verse. This continues for each character in the rhyme. The last person picked usually becomes the farmer for the next round. This version included the additional last line "She whipp'd all their bums, and sent them to bed." Throughout the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, the classic rhyme was varied many times. The rhyme is reputedly linked to both Queen Caroline, who had eight children, and Elizabeth Vergoose of Boston, who had six of her own children and ten step-children. Other than their many children, there is no evidence connecting these figures to the rhyme. "I Had a Little Nut Tree" Lyrics: I Had a Little Nut Tree I had a little nut tree. Nothing would it bear, But a silver nutmeg And a golden pear. The King of Spain's daughter Came to visit me, And all for the sake Of my little nut tree. Her dress was made of crimson, Golden was her hair, She asked me for my nut tree And my golden pear. I said, "So fair a princess Never did I see, I'll give you all the fruit From my little nut tree. I had a little nut tree. Nothing would it bear, But a silver nutmeg And a golden pear. The King of Spain's daughter Came to visit me, And all for the sake Of my little nut tree. I dances over the water, I skipped across the sea. And all the birds in the air couldn't catch me. Historical Background "I Had a Little Nut Tree" is believed to have first been published in 1797 in "Newest Christmas Box." James Orchard Halliwell claimed the rhyme refers to Juana of Castile, who visited the court of Henry VII in 1506. Having both been widowed, Juana and Henry VII were pressured to marry each other; however, the marriage never happened. Another theory claims the rhyme celebrates Queen Catherine of Aragon, King Henry VIII's first wife and Juana's sister. Juana and Catherine were daughters of Ferdinand and Isabella, the Spanish monarchs who commissioned Christopher Columbus' voyage to the New World.

Buy our nursery rhyme songs: *******www.amazon****/gp/product/B004YCO5OM/ *******www.amazon****/gp/product/B004YCOWJK/ Historical Background: "Little Boy Blue" theoretically alludes to Cardinal Thomas Wolsey (1475-1530), a prominent English statesman and figure in the Roman Catholic Church during the reign of Henry VIII. Wealthy and arrogant ("blowing one's horn"), Wolsey was disliked among both the courtiers and commoners of England. The line "where's the boy who look after the sheep?" alludes to Wolsey's efforts to profit for himself rather than the good of the country. It is suggested that the title "Little Boy Blue" was derived from Wolsey's Blazon of Arms that featured the faces of four leopards as opposed to traditional scarlet cardinal robes. Because open criticism of the Cardinal would have been punished with harsh penalty or death, this rhyme is suggested to have been a masked message of rebellion opposing Wolsey's selfish greed. Buy our nursery rhyme songs: *******www.amazon****/gp/product/B004YCO5OM/ *******www.amazon****/gp/product/B004YCOWJK/ Historical Background: "The Farmer in the Dell" is reputed to have originated in Germany in 1826, with the title "Es fuhr ein Bau'r ins Holz." It is suggested that the rhyme was brought to America by German immigrants and emerged in New York in 1883 in its modern form. "Muffin Man" Lyrics: Oh, do you know the Muffin Man? The Muffin Man, the Muffin Man. Oh, do you know the Muffin Man, That lives in Drury Lane? Oh, yes, I know the Muffin Man. The Muffin Man, the Muffin Man. Oh, yes, I know the Muffin Man, That lives in Drury Lane. Historical Background The first known publication of "Do You Know the Muffin Man" was printed in an 1820 British manuscript, preserved in the Bodleian Library, the main research library at the University of Oxford. Famous for the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane, "Drury Lane" is an actual street in London. The "Muffin Man" in the rhyme presumably alludes to a muffin man who delivered muffins door-to-door, much like a milk man delivering milk in America. During the mid-nineteenth century, the rhyme gained immense popularity, primarily in America and the Netherlands.

The Queen continued to allow the cat to roam about as long as she kept the throne room free of mice. "Pop Goes the Weasel" Lyrics: Round and round the cobbler's bench, The monkey chased the weasel. The monkey thought it was all in fun. Pop! Goes the weasel. A penny for a spool of thread, A penny for a needle. That's the way the money goes. Pop! Goes the weasel. Historical Background Dating back to the 1700s, "Pop Goes the Weasel" originated from Cockney Rhyming Slang, a system of cryptic phrases used by Cockneys and poor Londoners. Rhyming Slang is created by finding a rhyme for a given word, identifying a synonym for the rhyme, and then substituting the synonym for the original word. For example, "head" rhymes with "bread," and the Cockney Rhyming Slang for "head" is "loaf." Cockneys created the secret slang because of their suspicion of strangers and strong dislike for the police. "Pop" is the slang word for pawn, and "weasel" originates from "weasel and stout," meaning coat. During difficult financial times, poor commoners would pawn their suits on Mondays and reclaim it before Sunday in order to be properly dressed for church. Thus, the birth of the saying "Pop Goes the Weasel."
