Google's Zurich HQ: Office Fun For Everyone... Who Works There, Anyway Ever looked around your office and thought "surely there's a better way than this soulless cubicle hell?" Well, there probably isn't. Unless you happen to work for Google in their Swiss HQ, that is. Because, frankly, their new office is awe-inspiringly amazing: it's an exercise in lateral-thinking, creativity-run-wild interior design. Slides to the canteen, cable-car meeting rooms, beanbags, fake snow, a multitude of colors. Check it out... you'll be as filled with envy as an envious person with a degree in enviousness. See what I mean? Presumably it makes for a happy, fun-filled workforce. How they ever get time to do any work I don't know. Still, I work from my couch, so I could always put a slide in somewhere, and stick a bunch of beanbags about the place. It wouldn't quite have the same effect, though.

The Vice Presidential candidate often linked to Senator Barack Obama’s ticket removed himself from the possible running. Ohio Governor Ted Strickland said Tuesday he would absolutely not join the Democratic’s presidential ticket in the fall, if asked. Strickland previously backed Senator Hillary Clinton during her campaign for the party’s nomination, and after her bow-down, has since endorsed Obama for president. The governor said to NPR that while he is not interested in being the VP for Obama, it does not mean he is any less committed to helping him reach the presidency. And on Tuesday, Senator John McCain continued to push for presidential debates with voters versus the traditional media-led t-v productions. McCain stated that his campaign challenges Obama’s side to 10 debates over the summer. The presumed Republican presidential nominee also suggested that in order to keep the face-offs on a friendly level, that the two travel to the town hall meetings together in the same plane. McCain said QUOTE, “The American people want a respectful and civilized discussion.”

This 1961 U.S. Civil Defense film is significant because it was among the first of its kind to characterize nuclear fallout as dangerous. Making the claim that every U.S. citizen lives within fallout range of a “likely nuclear attack target,” the film uses maps and various shots of highways, suburbs, crowds, and pedestrians to show the potential for fallout to affect everyone. The use of dramatic music and narration suggests that this was a typical “scare film” meant to induce the public to take the threat of nuclear fallout seriously. There is even footage of a man dying in a hospital bed, presumably of radiation sickness. Various methods for surviving nuclear war for humans and even livestock are shown. Not a cheery Cold War propaganda relic, this film about the dangers and effects of radiation is a serious affair. Fallout shelters and obtaining them was a serious concern for a family terrified of nuclear radiation, illness, sickness, and poisoning.

Dedicated to all 2004 December 26th Boxing Day Tsunami Victims, those injured, and those otherwise affected. The terrible devastation and the aftermath of this catastrophe cuaght on tape. Sri Lanka and Thailand were severely impacted by the tsunami on December 26, 2004. Tsunami Thailand 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake was an undersea earthquake that occurred at 00:58:53 UTC (07:58:53 local time) December 26, 2004, with an epicentre off the west coast of Sumatra, Indonesia. Surprisingly, some islands right in the middle of the tsunami were not badly affected. It turns out their atolls, or coral reefs, absorbed much of the wave. The coral ridges protected them. In many regions of the Asian waters, there is a practice some fishermen use, of dynamiting the natural coral reefs to bring up fish. These barriers to the tsunami were no longer in place to deflect the water. The disaster promoted a global outpouring of sympathy, with governments, individuals and corporations pledging more than $13 billion in aid. According to UN database, nearly two years after donors pledged billions to help the victims only half the money had been spent. Of the half a million people left homeless by the disaster, only a third have been permanently rehoused. The public response to the tsunami was very untypical. A combination of events - the dramatic nature of the huge wave, its occurrence at Christmas, the size of the disaster, the fact that so many Westerners died, the availability of spectacular video footage and the extensive TV coverage that secured - meant that the global public gave far more than ever before. The money went to aid agencies that were too small to mastermind such a mammoth task. Oxfam has spent more than $280 million on disaster recovery work and is now more than three-quarters of the way through its response plan. Aid workers have helped more than 2.3 million people across seven countries to get back into their homes.Despite the outpouring of generosity from aid agencies and individuals, recipient countries say pledges by some governments have still not been honoured. The earthquake triggered a series of devastating tsunamis along the coasts of most landmasses bordering the Indian Ocean, killing more than 225,000 people in eleven countries, and inundating coastal communities with waves up to 30 meters With a magnitude of between 9.1 and 9.3, it is the second largest earthquake ever recorded on a seismograph. This earthquake had the longest duration of faulting ever observed, between 8.3 and 10 minutes. It caused the entire planet to vibrate as much as 1 cm (0.5 inches) and triggered other earthquakes as far away as Alaska. The disaster is known by the scientific community as the Great Sumatra-Andaman earthquake, and is also known as the Asian Tsunami and the Boxing Day Tsunami. Thailand: 5,395 dead, 2,993 missing. Many of the missing are presumed dead. Maldives: 82 dead, 26 missing. The latest disater to hit Asia, Cyclone Nargis struck May 2008, bringing winds of up 120mph and flooding to the badly affected Irrawaddy Delta region, Burma Myanmar. The cyclone had left twice as many people vulnerable as the 2004 Asian tsunami.

ALTHOUGH PEOPLE PRESUME THE EXISTENCE OF A MATERIAL WORLD OUTSIDE OF OUR BRAINS, LIGHT, SOUND AND COLORS DO NOT EXIST; ONLY ENERGY EXISTS Although the fact that all of our senses are formed inside our brains has been scientifically proven, many people still claim that the originals of the images we see exist outside our brains. However, they will never be able to prove this claim.

There are those of you who think booze manufacturers are classic defensive stocks. We think Diageo is a great stock because of its discipline. That it only sells premium brands - to the people who are the most depressed, presumably.

Slideshow of adverts and mail order cat. illustrations mainly, with some magazine feature and manufacturer's material. Have included a few stocking ads, as well. [Error in vid: the first frame for 1920 has two pictures of women in girdles on the left - these should have been dated 1930, if in fact, any firm year can be assigned to them.]The absence of the garter (in widespread use until c 1930) from this material, seems odd - presumably they were covered by the lengthy bloomers etc. Also, in order the better to display their wares, manufacturers' photos for ads etc always show models wearing their underwear beneath , say, a hip girdle although from the early to mid 30s (and from the mid 20s, in the case of the suspender belt) when corsetry could be worn next to the skin, it would, when possible, be worn over it, in real life.

Cycling is the use of bicycles, or - less commonly - unicycles, tricycles, quadricycles and other similar wheeled human powered vehicles (HPVs) as a means of transport, a form of recreation or a sport. It is done on roads and paths, across open country or even over snow and ice (icebiking). As a sport, cycling is governed internationally by the Union Cycliste Internationale in Switzerland (for upright bicycles) and by the International Human Powered Vehicle Association (for other HPVs, or human-powered vehicles). Cycling for transport and touring is promoted on a European level by the European Cyclists' Federation, with associated members from Great Britain, Japan and elsewhere. Regular conferences on cycling for transport are held under the auspices of Velo City; global conferences are coordinated by Velo Mondia.Mountain biking grew in the late 20th century, including recreation and racing. It emphasises riding special cycles with high gear ratios over rough paths, special obstacle courses or directly cross country. While very popular as a sport, it has also been criticised for damaging the countryside.Shortly after the introduction of bicycles, competitions developed independently in many parts of the world. Early races involving boneshaker style bicycles were predictably fraught with injuries. Large races became popular during the 1890s "Golden Age of Cycling", with events across Europe, and in the U.S. and Japan as well. At one point, almost every major city in the US had a velodrome or two for track racing events. However since the middle of the 20th century cycling has become a minority sport in the US whilst in Continental Europe it continues to be a major sport, particularly in France, Belgium, Italy and Spain. The most famous of all bicycle races is the Tour de France. This began in 1903, and continues to capture the attention of the sporting world. The physical exercise gained from cycling is generally linked with increased health and well-being. According to the World Health Organization, physical inactivity is second only to tobacco smoking as a health risk in developed countries, and this is associated with many tens of billions of dollars of healthcare costs.[10] The WHO's report[11] suggests that increasing physical activity is a public health 'best buy', and that cycling is a 'highly suitable activity' for this purpose. The charity Sustrans reports that investment in cycling provision can give a 20:1 return from health and other benefits.[12] It has been estimated that, on average, approximately 20 life-years are gained from the health benefits of road bicycling for every life-year lost through injury. One concern often expressed (both by non-cyclists and some cyclists) is the thought that riding in traffic exposes the cyclist to higher levels of air pollution, especially if he travels on or along busy roads. This has been shown to be untrue, as the pollutant and irritant count within cars is consistently higher,[29] (presumably because of limited circulation of air within the car and due to the air intake being directly in the stream of other traffic).Bicycles were first developed in 1817 and have long since been used as a form of transport. Originally, the front wheel was much larger than the rear wheel, and the rider was elevated a great deal, making them difficult to control and very dangerous. In 1885, J.K. Starley of England devised the more modern bike with a chain and gearing to allow the wheels to be of equal size. Although bicycle races had been held on the old "penny farthings", the new bikes stimulated the growth of bicycle racing as a sport.Bicycles were first developed in 1817 and have long since been used as a form of transport.
