Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) and State Farm® are educating elementary students about the dangers of underage alcohol use - the number one youth drug problem - by introducing Protecting You/Protecting Me®(PY/PM) to Georgia schools. State Farm has donated the curriculum, training and materials to five FCCLA-affiliated high schools. High school students enrolled in this service-learning program will in turn teach PY/PM's life-saving curriculum to five elementary schools. "Protecting You/Protecting Me teaches grade school children about the harmful effects of alcohol before they face their first decision to drink it around age 12," said Glynn Birch, MADD national president. "Studies show that the human brain does not finish developing until a person is at least in their early 20s. The earlier we empower kids to make safe, healthy, legal choices, the better the chance they will wait until 21 to drink alcohol. Youth who have their first drink before the age of 19 are significantly more likely to become alcohol dependent and to drive after drinking than those who did not drink before age 19."

Volkswagen ahead of industry and the government's deadline Volkswagen of America, Inc. announced today that its Electronic Stabilization Program (ESP) will be standard equipment on every 2009 model year Volkswagen vehicle – passenger cars, sport utility vehicles, and minivans. By offering ESP as a standard feature, Volkswagen is the first non-luxury manufacturer to include an electronic stabilization system at no additional cost on every vehicle it sells – well ahead of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's (NHTSA) deadline requiring all 2012 model year vehicles to have such systems. "Volkswagen has long been a leader in making high technology accessible to all," said Volkswagen of America, Inc. CEO Stefan Jacoby. "ESP has been available on all Volkswagens in the US for several years. Now, making ESP standard across our entire line reinforces Volkswagen’s commitment to safety for all our customers, and further shows why we are a market leader in offering some of the safest vehicles on the road today." NHTSA predicts nearly 10,000 lives could be saved each year if all automakers included electronic stabilization systems as standard equipment.

Chad Boult M.D., M.Ph., M.B.A/professor & director, Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg School of Public Health "How often do you see your children?" Doctor Chad Boult loves spending time with older patients finding out whats really going on in their lives. Chad Boult M.D., M.Ph., M.B.A/professor & director, Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg School of Public Health: "I took a fellowship in geriatrics and realized how enormously helpful we can be to these people and how much they appreciate it and then you realize that it is very rewarding and it can make for a very satisfying career". Unfortunately there are too few doctors like Chad Boult. Less than 90 percent of medical students take a course in geriatrics. Chad Boult M.D., M.Ph., M.B.A/professor & director, Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg School of Public Health: "Geriatrics is not just medical care for older adults. Its special. In each case theres a unique aspect of care for the older person with challenges not faced by younger people typically. So it requires specialized services and systems." Kathleen Trevor Grieves working with patient To help bridge the gap between older patients and their doctors, Boult developed the guided care program. It relies on specially trained nurses to work with geriatric patients and their doctors. Kathleen Trevor Grieves, R.N., Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health: "I love working with the geriatric population for several different reasons, and one is because of the needs that they have that are not found else where." With nearly 8,000 boomers turning 60 every day, theres a looming crisis on the horizon in the area of geriatric care. Lisa Yagoda/AARP Health and Supportive Services: "We need to look at how we meet the needs of the aging population differently than we looked at it before. here needs to be a paradigm shift in how the system delivers care and services to older adults." The guided care program might be the first step in changing the way our current health care system works for older Americans.

HopeLine is a program exclusive to Verizon Wireless that puts wireless services and equipment to work to assist victims of domestic violence. The long-running HopeLine program collects no-longer-used wireless phones and equipment in any condition from any service provider. The used phones are either refurbished or recycled. With the funds raised from the sale of the refurbished phones, Verizon Wireless donates wireless phones and airtime to victims, and provides funding and other contributions to non-profit domestic violence shelters and prevention programs across the country. Verizon Wireless also concentrates on protecting the environment by collecting spent rechargeable batteries for recycling.
