It’s almost like a flashback to 2010. Toyota announced another recall Tuesday -- and nearly 1.7 million vehicles worldwide may be at risk of fuel leakage and other problems.
According to a statement from Toyota: "Due to insufficient tightening of the fuel pressure sensor connected to certain engine fuel delivery pipes ... there is a possibility that the pressure sensor could loosen over time."
The recalls are mostly in Japan, but also include Lexus IS and GS luxury sedans sold in North America. That's where Toyota faces the biggest challenges in winning back customers’ trust. Toyota was the only large automaker to post a sales decline last year in the U.S.
A business expert tells The Wall Street Journal - the recall - quote - “is damaging the brand more.”
Auto analyst Koji Endo tells ABC the newest recalls will cost Toyota about $240 million, but won't hurt its earnings much.
"But there is that perception of here we go again...”7
Other crisis-management experts think the recall won't dent Toyota’s reputation. Eric Dezenhall, CEO of Dezenhall Resources tells The Wall Street Journal
[Toyota officials] “...have done a pretty good job of communicating with their core buyers...” [since the 2010 recall.]
And a Tokyo-based analyst thinks the lessons Toyota has learned from the past.
“After Toyota’s recalls last year, the company is more sensitive to recall issues and conducting them as early as possible.”
According to the Associated Press -- Toyota sold 8.4 million vehicles worldwide in 2010 -- making it the leader in global sales. So do you think Toyota will retain its title this recall?

“Summer Infant of Woonsocket is voluntarily recalling nearly two million of its baby monitors after two infants were strangled to death.” (WPRI)
It’s always sad to report on death--but even more so when it’s an infant. Pennsylvania’s ABC-affiliate WHTM says......the recall is “...linked to the death of a 10-month-old Washington, D.C. girl last March and a six-month-old South Carolina boy in November.
In both cases, the monitors had been placed on or near the cribs.”
The Consumer Product Safety Commission is recalling two different Summer Infant monitor products-- some due to the attached electrical cord and others for the rechargeable batteries.
CPSC reports: “...the cords can present a strangulation hazard to infants and toddlers if placed too close to a crib. Because of this serious strangulation risk, parents and caregivers should never place these and other corded cameras within three feet of a crib.”
...and CNN reports: “...the rechargeable batteries sold with some of these monitors can overheat and burst, thus potentially burning people.”
This “product was sold for about $200 only at Babies ‘R’ Us between September 2009 and May 2010”
Bloomberg Businessweek says Summer Infant products sold from January 2003 to February 2011 will receive new warning labels and instructions...
Atlanta’s WSBTV talked to the mother of am 18-month-old and a child safety expert.
“So often you buy a product with the intention of one thing that you overlook that it could be a danger.”
“You get used to things being in a certain configuration. It’s just when the child starts to become mobile that it becomes an issue.”
A CNN news blog also reported that at least seven babies and toddlers nationwide have died since 2004 after being strangled by monitor cords...the last two involving Summer Infant items.
South Carolina’s WMBF says the recall isn’t about fixing the product but warning the public.

If you have one of the recalled DePuy ASR hip implants, you should get a blood test as soon as possible, even if you don't have any symptoms. The reason is that the metal-on-metal hip cup may be creating metal debris in your joint. Even if you don't feel any pain or other symptoms, it's a good idea to get tested now to find out if there are high levels of metal in your body.

Wisconsin lawmakers could face recall elections after Governor Scott Walker signed a bill into law that strips unions of some of their collective bargaining rights.
Republicans amended the bill to remove non-spending issues, effectively bypassing Democrats -- who remained out of the state in protest of the bill. (Video: CNN)
And the Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee is moving fast to mobilize public opinion against the state’s Republicans.
“We expect pins to get bowled over, pies to get rolled, but we certainly don’t expect our senators to get flattened. Last month, Sen. Olsen said eliminating collective bargaining is, quote, ‘pretty radical.’ But Olsen voted for Gov. Walker’s backroom deal to end collective bargaining.”
MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow points to a SurveyUSA poll -- which suggests some Wisconsin Republicans are already facing backlash from their constituents.
“In the district of Republican Senator Randy Hopper 54% of his District would please rather have somebody else represent them now. He's up for recall. That's not 54% of Democrats in the district. That's voters in the whole district. That's not Democrats. That's voters. Those who elected them a couple of months ago.”
But it isn’t just Republicans in the crosshairs. In Wisconsin - an elected official can’t go up for recall until he or she has been in office at least a year. 16 lawmakers are eligible - and Republicans are launching their own recall campaign against as many as eight Democrats.
National Review spoke with the state’s Republican Party chair -- Mark Jefferson -- who says -- the GOP isn’t worried.
“I think we’ll withstand it, but only if we are able to mobilize our people and counter what the Democrats are doing. ... we do have a lot of taxpayers out there who have been waiting for these types of reforms to take place. And we think they’re going to stand strong on election day.”
Still - a blogger for Forbes predicts recalls could be a sign of a bigger backlash on the horizon for the GOP.
“But the recalls are only a small part of what is likely going to be a huge anti-Republican backlash across the nation, as working Americans finally realize what that party actually stands for: an playing field heavily tilted toward the rich and powerful, toward corporate power, and against worker rights.”
Governor Walker announced that he is rescinding layoff notices he sent last week for 1,500 state workers because the cut to collective bargaining rights and public employee benefits will create enough budget savings. (Source: New York Times)
