A story of my first experience with mail fraud. The remote-controlled ghost that I ordered from an ad in my Richie Rich comic book. It was 7 feet tall and could be controlled up to 50 feet to scare my friends. I waited all summer for the package, and was almost more impressed than disappointed.

Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders called it “Robin Hood in reverse.” Ahead of a crucial cloture vote in the Senate - Congressional Democrats are railing against a deal negotiated between President Obama and Republicans. The biggest sticking point? An estate tax provision.
“This is a tax on the transfer of property after your death. In the president's deal with Republicans, individuals are exempt from the estate tax up to $5 million per person, and the maximum tax rate on estate is 35 percent"
Democrats were hoping to raise the estate tax rate to as much as 55 percent. On MSNBC - Democratic Representative Chris Van Hollen calls the 35 percent compromise a “bonanza.”
REP. CHRIS VAN HOLLEN (D-MD): “But the overwhelming number of Democrats in the Senate and the House recognize that this particular deal on the estate tax is an unnecessary giveaway, at a time when we're facing these big deficits. I mean, literally, it boils down to $25 billion for 6,600 families.”
There was no estate or inheritance tax in 2010. That’s about to change -- but Alan Sloan tells American Public Media -- most Americans won’t even notice.
CHIOTAKIS: “Does the average Joe really care about estates? I mean most Americans don't have estates, right?”
SLOAN: “You know that, and I know that, but most people don't know that because over the years, the estate tax has been changed to the death tax, which makes it sound like it applies to everybody who dies, and it doesn't. It's an example for the triumph of propaganda over reality.”
Not so -- suggests Fox News’ Jim Angle -- who says the estate tax affects more than your average Richie Rich.
“But the estate tax can have an effect on small businesses in any community. The small manufacturer, the construction company, or the lumber yard. ... The reason is that many small businesses have equipment and buildings and land and the estate tax is levied on all those assets. ... So small businesses which create two-thirds of the nation's jobs could be gutted, and money paid in estate taxes cannot be used to create jobs.”
Either way - CBS’s Nancy Cordes says Democrats making an issue over the estate tax aren’t walking away empty-handed.
Reporter: “Among the additions - a tax credit for renewable energy and green jobs, tax relief for mass transit, a tax deduction for schoolteachers and tax benefits to landowners who set aside their property for conservation.”
And it isn’t just Democrats against the deal -- there are Republicans as well who say it’s too expensive. Still - analysts widely expect it’ll get the 60 votes needed to block a potential filibuster.
