Severiano Ballesteros - hailed as the king of European golf - died today at age 54 after a three year battle with brain cancer. ESPN looks back at the man and the skills that endeared him to so many.
EDITOR: Please show Ballesteros hitting the ball before this clip.
ANNOUNCER: “The cheeky lad. He’s run it through the middle and played an absolute gem of a stroke.”
BOB LEE: “Seve Ballesteros could not only imagine, but dared to attempt the risky golf shots no one else would.”
ANNOUNCER: “And somehow, from his knees, he hit the ball 170 yards. Unbelievable stuff from Seve Ballesteros.”
Ballesteros’ golfing style was commonly called quote “swashbuckling” by observers. A writer for The Guardian says this sense of mischief drew people to him.
“It wasn't merely what he won. It was how he played. He made birdies from locations where anyone else would have been content with a bogey; he would hit great shots and bad shots, not only in the same round, but on the same hole.”
Ballesteros first appeared on the radar when he placed second at the mere age nineteen at The Open Championship. He would later go on to win the tournament three times- as well as a numerous other competitions. According to Sky News- he helped lift European golfing to its true potential.
ENDA BRADY: “Ballesteros’ success help put European golf where it is now. And the way he won Ryder Cup in particular inspired many of today’s top professionals.”
But not only did he inspire his fellow golfers with his skills and humor- the Telegraph speaks with one who knew him to have an excellent relationship with his fans.
JULIAN SMALL: “I remember when he was out on the west course and he was over a very difficult shot. and when he was there over that very difficult shot a little boy standing behind in the crowd was jingling some coins in his pocket. And he stepped away from the ball and he said to the little boy ‘Are you nervous?’ And the boy said ‘Yes!’ He said ‘So am I.’ And went back to hit the ball! I mean, that was Seve. Fabulous.”
At the Spanish Open in Barcelona the Flags are set at half mast, and the players are expected to wear black ribbons in memory of the man who did so much for the game.
