With Faust, Alexander Sokurov completes his cinematic tetralogy based on the lives of historical figures, which began with studies of Adolf Hitler (Moloch, 1999), Vladimir Lenin (Taurus, 2000) and Emperor Hirohito (The Sun, 2005). His new film delves deeper into the nature of power with a unique take on Goethe's classic tale.
The winner of the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival in 2011, Sokurov's interpretation of the myth is not an adaptation in the usual sense, but what he describes as a 'reading of what remains between the lines'. Here Faust is a thinker, a mouthpiece for ideas, a transmitter for words, a schemer and a daydreamer. He is an anonymous man driven by simple instincts: hunger, greed and lust. Sokurov asks us to question how this literary character informs our understanding of the real tyrants who abused their position of power, and how an unhappy life can lead some to be seduced by monstrous ideologies.
Suzanne Simons reveals to Kurt Schemers, her first-ever inside look, based on extraordinary access to Blackwater founder Erik Prince, and dozens of his key employees, Blackwater is just the tip of Erik Prince's empire.

After years of living with his father’s $65 billion legacy and a toxic last name, the eldest son of the biggest Ponzi-schemer in U.S. history just couldn’t take it anymore. Police say Mark Madoff hung himself from a pipe with a dog leash exactly two years to the day after Bernard Madoff’s arrest.
“Police say Mark’s Madoff father-in-law found the body in Madoff’s Manhattan apartment. His two- year-old son was asleep in another room. Authorities say Madoff had sent an email to his wife in Florida saying take care of our son. His wife became concern that he was suicidal. Madoff had also sent an email to his lawyer just before he took his life saying nobody wants to hear the truth. Take care of my family.”
CNN dug a little deeper to find out why Madoff would want to take his own life.
“Into the circumstances that surrounded his death, was he depressed? Well good question, certainty he has been slapped with two very serious civil law suits. One filed just a couple of years ago and one filed on December 8th, just a few days ago. That one going after him for millions and millions of dollars not only him, but his brother as well as Bernie Madoff’s brother.”
NBC nightly News has another take saying- Madoff was upset about the media coverage of his father’s massive fraud scheme and the prospect that he was in on the scam.
“Mark Madoff always denied any knowledge of his father’s scheme but the clouds of rumor and innuendo kept growing. Madoff and his younger brother Andrew turned their father in to authorities after he confessed, but the sons were never able to escape suspicion that they too were in on the scam which they denied.”
But some still think the family was in on the scheme.
“Until Bernard Madoff’s giant Ponzi scheme collapsed, his family seemingly had no worries in the world.”
Others say the stigma of the Madoff name was so strong it led Mark’s wife to change her and their childrens last name to Morgan. But a writer for Forbes says his wife didn’t have to make the change nor did Madoff have to take his life- he could have moved on.
“...Even without changing his name by (a) giving back the tainted money and (b) giving back to the greater good through charitable giving and community service. Apparently, he had no will. Unless, of course, that was in his last will and testament.”
NBC reports this is the third person to commit suicide because of the Madoff scandal.
