Video summary of the ALDE seminar "Energy 'islands' in the EU - implementation of the 3rd energy package" Event date: 09/04/08 16:30 to 19:00 Location: ASP 3G3, European Parliament, Brussels Poster ALDE SeminarThe 3rd energy package was adopted by the Commission in September. Taking into account the Baltic States and Finland energy market isolation, lack of electricity and gas networks, and total dependence on Russian gas, it is crucial to assess if the local companies are ready to implement the proposed legislation and if the latter will contribute to the completion of a real, open and fair internal energy market. The aim of the seminar is to discuss a different approach from Baltic States and Finland industries side as well as from governmental bodies. Video summary of the ALDE Seminar "Arctic Governance in a global world: is it time for an Arctic Charter?" Event date: 07/05/08 16:30 to 19:00 Location: Room A3G3, European Parliament, Brussels More than Twenty Year's ago, Gorbachev expressed that the Arctic States should form a "genuine zone of peace and fruitful co-operation" in the far north. Over that period several key issues - pollution, climate change leading to the opening of hitherto closed seaways, resource use, sustainability, security of energy supply, fish stocks - have emerged which have focussed attention on the High North. With this background in mind the question which needs answering is whether the current governance structures in the High North are sufficient to deal with these challenges. Questions which need answering are e.g. Could the Arctic Council be overhauled so as to provide the vehicle for improved Artic collaboration? Might there be the opportunity to consider a binding Arctic Charter? In view of these aspects, an ALDE seminar with elected representatives from the Arctic, academics, scientists and other experts could provide a thorough contribution to the debate. Video summary of the ALDE Seminar on "The Future of European Bioenergy Industries" Event date: 14/05/07 14:30 to 18:00 Location: Room ASP 3G3, European Parliament, Brussels The European Council's decision on a European energy policy includes the binding target of 20% of the EU’s total energy consumption to come from renewables by 2020 and 10% from biofuels. Member States need to prepare to reach this target, and related industries need to prepare themselves and their technologies to do the same. With the March Council's decisions on energy as a backdrop, the purpose of this seminar is to present the current situation of bioenergy industries in Europe, and show which measures and legislation might be taken in order to stay on track to meet the Council's targets. The seminar will also be an opportunity to share the experiences of the different companies using or producing bioenergy in this new challenge. Video summary of the ALDE Seminar on Consumer Policy Event date: 17/10/07 15:00 to 18:30 Location: Room PHS 5B 001, European Parliament, Brussels Since the creation of the Internal Market, Consumer policy has played a consistent and increasing role in creating results for the benefit of the European citizens. The Single Market has always been and still is the guarantor of wealth in Europe. However, there are a growing number of European citizens who feel that the Single Market does not really make much difference to their lives. Perhaps some of the benefits are now taken for granted and citizens sense that they major gains are being enjoyed by enterprises rather than touching themselves in their daily lives. Therefore we need to find solutions for making the results of a common consumer policy more visible. We need to sell the Single Market to the citizen again and elaborate on what has to be improved in order to deliver even greater benefits to them. The seminar will be divided in two parts. The first part will deal with the achievements of the Single Market and the role of consumer policy and the second part will have a look at the possibilities for improvement. Video summary of the Joint ALDE Seminar with CoR on "Competences on urban transport: who does what?" Event date: 09/01/08 15:00 to 18:30 Location: Room ASP A3G3, European Parliament, Brussels 80% of the European citizens are estimated living in urban areas. Cities must then comply with their mobility needs and develop an offer within their competences. The European Union brings indeed an added-value with regards to exchange of best practices, impact assessment studies etc. The European Commission Green Paper "Towards a new culture for urban mobility" published in September 2007 is the first step towards the adoption of an Action programme in this field that will also identify the responsibilities of the various actors. In the framework of the subsidiarity, it is essential to know who does what for urban transport so as to maximise the efficiency and coherence of the policies. We do not ask for money or more competence but a clarification on European, national, regional and local authorities' competences. This ALDE seminar will bring together stakeholders of urban transport in Europe to share experiences and find the balance in distribution of competences. . Video summary of the ALDE Seminar on Persecuted Christian Minorities Event date: 05/03/08 15:00 to 19:00 Location: Room ASP 1G2, European Parliament, Brussels Persecuted Christian Minorities form one part of wider human rights and religious rights issues. Although it would be possible to speak about different religious and forms of discrimination, the focus of this seminar is on Christians. Disinformation leads to discrimination and through this seminar we hope to dispel myths and notions that do not accurately reflect reality. This parliament has taken a firm stand for persecuted Christians in a resolution, which mentioned countries of Asia and Middle East which will be discussed. Situation in China, Assyrian minority in Iraq and Palestinian Christians are included in today's program, as examples of the difficulties Christian minorities face. These difficulties range from harassment to murder and this seminar seeks to inform the audience about this grim reality. There is a plenty of time for discussion following the presentations and the audience will be challenged to think of something to improve things, not just to hear about them. Video summary of the ALDE Seminar "Absorption of EU funds: lessons from Ireland and Spain" Event date: 10/06/08 09:00 to 11:30 Location: Room PHS 7C50, European Parliament, Brussels Following the adoption of the operational programmes, Member States and their regions are currently able to benefit from EU funding amounting to 347 billion euros, allocated for the Structural Funds for the 2007-2013 period. However, at the same time the new Member States can still use the funds under the previous Financial Perspectives (2000-2006). The pace and capacity of EU Member States to absorb EU funds differs from country to country. The reasons for slower absorption of Structural Funds may vary from lacking administrative capacity, lack of training and appropriate policy planning and budgeting, suspended payments to delays in adopting the operational programmes. This seminar will discuss lessons to learn from the Irish and Spanish experiences of implementing Structural and Cohesion Funds. The first panel will focus on Spanish and Irish approaches to developing the absorption capacity. The second panel will discuss the absorption capacity of the new Member States and their particularities. These lessons are meant to help in the design of strategies for increasing the absorption capacity in all Member States, but particularly in the newer ones, which are the greater beneficiaries of European assistance. Speakers will include the Commmissioner for Regional Policy, Mrs Danuta Hübner, national experts from Spain, Ireland and Romania, and a representative of the World Bank. Event dates: 10/06/06 to 10/06/08 Location: Room ASP 3G3, European Parliament, Brussels Look-alike products are deliberately designed to avoid any infringements of intellectual property rights, at least in some Member States. There is no consistency across Europe in the application of the law. Therefore different jurisdictions will apply different rules in the same EU single market, making it difficult for the industry to operate in a predictable environment. A look-alike product will be allowed in some Member states and will be considered as a counterfeit in others. A recent study on the "Effects of counterfeiting on EU SMEs" commissioned by DG Enterprise reveals that parasitic copying, also called look-alikes, represent the second source of concerns for SMEs regarding intellectual property rights infringements. The Green Paper on Counterfeiting and Piracy, the Enforcement Directive on Intellectual Property all make references to this problem but without making clear recommendations, leaving a grey legislative area. This debate will look at the impact for consumers, brand owners, distributors, the current legal situation, ways to improve it; taking into consideration the consumers’ right for the broadest, safest and cheapest choice of products. Our speakers will be representatives from the European Commission, Member State, consumers association, the industry - SMEs, retailers.
