There recently was a film plagiarism fiasco in Vietnam that involved a Vietnamese American from Orange County, California ripping off a Hollywood film to fool his fellow Vietnamese people that he's a Hollywood Hitchcock director and script writer. The plagiarist who pulled the scam, named Victor Vu, knew Vietnam had a Trade Embargo imposed by the United States until 1994 so he reckoned no one in Vietnam could have seen any Hollywood movie during the embargo. He picked a 20 year old Hollywood movie from 1991, Wolfgang Petersen's Hitchcock thriller Shattered, copied it shot by shot, renamed it Inferno (Giao lo dinh menh in Vietnamese) and released it in Vietnam as his masterpiece. Vu tooted his horn that he wrote this Hitchcock thriller while just a student and claimed he was the Hollywood Hitchcock director, the new breath of life for Vietnamese films, the man who changes the image of Vietnamese Cinema. Vu suckered Vietnamese people who trusted him when he declared with Inferno he was bringing his Hollywood expertise to Vietnam, instead he brought shot by shot plagiarism to Vietnam while getting rich by illegally duplicating and profiting from other people's work. But how lowly did Vu think of his fellow Vietnamese? Did he think they still live in caves? How did he think he was going to get away with this scam indefinitely? In this age of Facebook his sneaky scam was busted, that's right, on Facebook. These internet videos show Vu's Inferno was virtually a frame by frame copy of Shattered and for music he lifted John Powell's score from The Bourne Identity. After being caught red handed Vu retorted publicly that "all similarities to Shattered are just a coincidence", "Similarities like these are unavoidable for Hollywood Hitchcock directors like me and Wolfgang Petersen but it's too hard for Vietnamese people to be capable of understanding it". Unbelievable how lowly Vu think of his fellow Vietnamese. Vu's hogwash riled the Vietnamese public who demanded their cinema officials to sort it out, it was a whopping ruckus in 2010 and 2011 in Vietnam. Vietnamese cinema officials took up the case making Vu Vietnam's first film plagiarism case. Officials watched both Inferno and Shattered to compare and unanimously found Vu guilty of plagiarism. Victor Vu taking advantage of the American embargo on Vietnam to scam his fellow Vietnamese people and profit from it is completely unethical, unprofessional, not to mention it's criminal copyright infringement. *******www.thanhniennews****/2010/Pages/20101018175841.aspx *******www.thanhniennews****/2010/Pages/20101112133316.aspx *******www.thanhniennews****/2010/Pages/20110304165902.aspx *******english.vietnamnet.vn/en/lastest-news/5583/-inferno--removed-from-golden-kite-award-s-nomination.html *******english.cinet.vn/DefaultArticleDetail.aspx?zoneid=10&newsid=16791 *******tuoitrenews.vn/cmlink/tuoitrenews/lifestyle/elevating-no-it-s-lifted-1.20101 There is very extensive news on this fiasco in Vietnamese language.
