Notes on Siachen and the India's National Anthem: The Siachen Glacier is located in the eastern Karakoram range in the Himalaya Mountains at about 35°30′N 77°00′E / 35.5°N 77.0°E / 35.5; 77.0, just east of the Line of Control between India-Pakistan. India controls all of the Siachen Glacier itself, including all tributary glaciers. At 70 km (43 mi) long, it is the longest glacier in the Karakoram and second-longest in the world's non-polar areas. It falls from an altitude of 5,753 m (18,875 ft) above sea level at its source at Indira Col (pass) on the China border down to 3,620 m (11,875 ft) at its snout. The Siachen Glacier boasts the world's highest helipad, built by India. The world's highest battlefield is also located on the glacier at a height of 21,000 feet (6400 m) above the sea level. GSM mobile service was launched in 2009 near army base camp. = = = = = = Rabindranath Tagore's statement on who the National Anthem is addressed to: "A certain high official in His Majesty's service, who was also my friend, had requested that I write a song of felicitation towards the Emperor. The request simply amazed me. It caused a great stir in my heart. In response to that great mental turmoil, I pronounced the victory in Jana Gana Mana of that Bhagya Vidhata [ed. God of Destiny] of India who has from age after age held steadfast the reins of India's chariot through rise and fall, through the straight path and the curved. That Lord of Destiny, that Reader of the Collective Mind of India, that Perennial Guide, could never be George V, George VI, or any other George. Even my official friend understood this about the song. After all, even if his admiration for the crown was excessive, he was not lacking in simple common sense." During 1918-19, Tagore accepted an invitation from friend and controversial Irish poet James H. Cousins to spend a few days at the Besant Theosophical College, of which Cousins was the principal. On the evening of February 28, he joined a gathering of students and upon Cousins' request, sang the Jana Gana Mana in Bengali. In the days that followed, enchanted by the dreamy hills of Madanapalle, Tagore wrote down the English translation of the song and along with Cousins' wife, Margaret (an expert in Western music), set down the notation which is followed till this day.

Param Veer Chakra awardee Bana Singh from Jammu and Kashmir : chief guest. Speaking to presspersons here on Saturday, Capt. Singh, who also served at Siachen glacier during his service, lamented at the way the armed forces personnel in the country were treated by the government. Soldiers operate in hard to imagine and most hostile conditions to serve the country and they need to be treated better, he said. After the service, for years he was paid a pension of a mere Rs.160 which was raised following hue and cry at the treatment meted out to the armed forces personnel. It is not just the question of money as soldiers serve the cause of motherland. But this is not how they should be cared for, he said.
