It’s a classic roadtrip game -- you see a Volkswagen Beetle, yell “SLUG BUG,” and slug your neighbor. But with the newest generation of Beetle, you might have to re-learn what it looks like to avoid the punch.
AOL News has the scoop on the old model.
“The New Beetle went out of production in late 2009 after a decade. As critical to Volkswagen’s comeback as it was, one of the problems with the car was that its soft, bulbous lines and arched roof made it appealing to women. Especially those over 40, but men and young people passed it over.”
The new design is described as more masculine in order to avoid that demographic issue -- and was introduced at the New York Auto Show Monday. Times Live reports --
-- the Beetle is now longer, wider and shorter. It has narrower windows, a sharp crease along the sides, and a flatter roof -- and the built in flower pot has been axed.
And TIME’s Techland blog says the exterior design of the car isn’t all that’s new.
“[I]nterior features like a Fender Premium Audio System, an 80 percent larger glass sunroof that blocks virtually all ultraviolet radiation and ‘92 percent’ of thermal energy, and an automatic safety feature that kills electricity to the fuel pump in the event of a collision.”
The new Beetle will be available in September or October of this year, but its first owner won’t actually have to buy it.
“[T]he car will actually get it’s first owners from audience members of Oprah Winfrey’s TV show.”
The overhaul of the previous Beetle design is part of Volkswagen’s new business plan. According to CBC News, over the next ten years, Volkswagen wants to triple sales of cars and trucks in the U.S.
Volkswagen is also trying to broaden the market globally, according to USA Today...
“VW expects China, Europe, Mexico and the U.S. to be the main markets to start, growing to 60 or 70 countries, on all continents, quickly.”
TIME reports Volkswagen claims the 2012 Beetle will be the most fuel efficient yet, clocking 40 miles per gallon on the highway and 29 in the city.

Can you really communicate with the "pests" in your garden? Ellen Vande Visse believes that you can! Watch Beyond 50's video book trailer called "Ask Mother Nature" (Findhorn Press) to explain. She'll take you, step-by-step, into her garden to encounter the onslaught of maggots, cutworms, slugs and other "pests" She introduces you to the idea that you can make a deal with these "pests" by tuning in and communicating with the garden devas and Nature Spirits, rather than waging chemical warfare on them.
