BY JESSICA HORD You're watching multisource world video news analysis from Newsy. Hosni Mubarak is gone -- but the clashes in Egypt continue. This time, the rift between Coptic Christians and Muslims fuels the unrest in Cairo. The New York Times reports... “The clashes that started Tuesday night were the most serious since Egypt’s revolution … The dead included six Christians and five Muslims … all killed by gunshots. … the fighting … prompted the closing of a major Cairo highway and a wave of arson...” The latest outbreak isn’t the first time Egyptian Christians have faced violence – The Christian Science Monitor points out- this is a group that feels targeted by the government. “Egypt's revolution put the issue of how to protect its beleaguered Coptic Christian population on the back burner. But a fatal clash Tuesday between Muslims and Copts in Cairo has turned attention once again to religious tensions.” The Monitor adds- Copts are one of the bigger minorities in Egypt and often complain of government discrimination and persecution in a country where Muslims are the majority. (Video: euronews) And even though the latest clash was between Copts and Muslims.. Ahram Online reports many Muslims are actually supportive of Christian demands for fair treatment from the government. “These demands have the support of many Muslim activists who are not only participating in the Coptic sit-in before the TV building, but have also called for a million-man march next Friday in solidarity with the Copts, and in defense of what they describe as the unity of the nation's fabric.” But CBN correspondent George Thomas says the Christians in Cairo can’t trust the Muslims. “They can’t turn to the Islamists. You know the Christians today in Egypt, let me put it to you, Mark, this way – they are an afterthought.” “In essence you’ve got people who want to turn Egypt into an Islamic country and caught in the crossfire, of these agendas, are the poor Christians making up ten percent of the country.” But according to Egyptian media outlet Al Masry Al Youm The Muslim Brotherhood says- it’s just a small group of extremists- incited by the remaining members of Mubarak’s regime- who are fighting with the Coptic Christians.
