* Broadway ticket sales soar. * GMA profiles Broadway hot spot Tony's Di Napoli. * Chase & Espinosa return to Rent. * Drama Desk Award nominations announced. Last season there were 12.3 million tickets sold to Broadway shows. 65% of those tickets were purchased by Tourists, many of them from outside the United States. In other ticket stats, online ticket sales have grown an astonishing 368% in 7 seasons! Good Morning America will be doing a profile on the theatre district's friendliest eatery, Tony's Di Napoli. The restaurant, known for it's lovely servers who double as talented actors, singers and dancers, will be featured on GMA tomorrow morning, May 8th. Rent will be ending its run at the Nederlander Theatre on September 7th. However, before the final bow, Rent alumni Will Chase and Eden Espinosa will return to the ensemble cast. Chase will reprise his role as Roger beginning May 5th, while Espinosa will play the part of Maureen starting May 30th. The 53rd Drama Desk Award nominations have been announced and A Catered Affair, a musical about family relationships, leads the pack with 12 nominations. Other notables include the Adding Machine, which gathered 9 nominations, and South Pacific and Young Frankenstein, which both secured 8 nods. The Drama Desk will also hand out special ensemble awards to the cast of the off-Broadway show The Dining Room and Harold Pinter's The Homecoming. Read more at *******www.BroadwayBulletin**** This past Sunday a concert was taped at Rose Hall at Jazz at Lincoln Center which featured a pool of Tony Award contenders. Performers from Xanadu, In the Heights, South Pacific, Gypsy, Cry Baby, Passing Strange, Sunday in the Park with George, A Catered Affair, Little Mermaid, and Grease performed numbers for the invitation only audience. The concert will air in NY on June 7th on CBS. Check local listings for broadcast times. Kerry Butler recently released her debut record. Composed of Kerry's interpretations of Disney classics, Faith Trust and Pixie Dust is a unique collection of songs. Kerry will perform selections from the album tomorrow night, May 15th, at 5:30 at the Barnes and Noble on 66th and Broadway. A portion of the proceeds will benefit World Vision. The Outer Critics Circle just announced it's award winners for the 2007-09 season. August: Osage County took home Outstanding New Broadway Play, while Outstanding New Broadway Musical was a tie between Xanadu and Young Frankenstein. Harold Pinter's The Homecoming took the Outstanding Revival of a Play and South Pacific received the Outstanding Revival of a Musical award. An awards ceremony is scheduled for Thursday May 22nd at Sardi's. Debra and Mary's Night on the Town will feature the multi-talented playwrite/actor/singer Charles Busch as a special guest on May 19th at 8:30 at the Cornelia Street Cafe. In The Heights tops the list with 13 nominations, while the revival of South Pacific picked up 11. Tracy Letts' August: Osage County received the most for best new play with 7 nods. As for other musicals, Passing Strange, Xanadu and Cry Baby were all nominated for best new musical. In other Tony news, Stephen Sondheim will receive a special achievement award at this years awards ceremony. Theaterworks USA has announced their free summer theatre program. The production will be The Plant That Ate Dirty Socks by Joe Iconis. Performances begin Wednesday, July 16, 2008 at the Lucille Lortel Theatre (121 Christopher St.) and runs through Friday, August 22. Just a reminder, more than 20,000 FREE tickets will be distributed to The Plant That Ate Dirty Socks this summer. The fine people at Tonys' saw fit to honor me with my very own portrait. Best Musical went to Passing Strange, while Best Play went to August: Osage County. August: Osage County, Passing Strange, and Gypsy each garnered three awards. The Drama Desk also presented a special, lifetime achievement awards to Edward Albee and James Earl Jones. Jesse Tyler Ferguson, last seen on Broadway in The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, will make the transition to the small screen to star in the new Fox comedy Do Not Disturb. The show is about a wacky local inn and co-stars Radio Golf's Harry Lennox. The Drama Desk Awards aren't the only Broadway awards show this week, as tomorrow, May 22, The Outer Circle Critics Awards will be handed out at the famous Sardi's. The winners were announced May 12 and included Young Frankenstein and Xanadu in a tie for Best Musical. August: Osage County took home Outstanding New Broadway Play and South Pacific took home four awards, including Outstanding Revival of a Musical.
