How to Avoid UV Exposure|tan through window Ultraviolet (UV) radiation exposure is one of the leading causes of skin cancer and vision damage. The effects of UV radiation often take many years to develop, which means you may not notice the damage until it's too late. Taking precautions and reducing or avoiding UV exposure can help prevent effects like skin cancer, cataracts, premature aging. Stay safe in the sun and you will have healthy skin and eyes for many years to come 1 Wear broad-spectrum sunscreen. It's not enough to wear sunscreen. You need to wear the right kind of sunscreen and keep reapplying it regularly throughout the day in order to ensure that you are adequately protected in the sun. Broad-spectrum sunscreen protects against both types of radiation, meaning you'll get the best protection you can against UV exposure.[1] By law, broad-spectrum sunscreen must pass rigorous testing procedures to ensure that it protects against both UVA and UVB radiation.

How to Check tanning and skin cancer|melanoma treatment Early detection of skin cancer is important and can be lifesaving, especially for certain types of skin cancer such as melanoma and squamous cell carcinoma. It is estimated that 76,380 new cases of melanoma will be diagnosed in 2016 and over 13,000 will die from the skin cancer.[1] Given that timing is so crucial to diagnosing and treating skin cancer, you should follow a few simple steps to learn how to detect skin cancer on your skin 1 Perform a skin survey. The best way to check yourself for skin cancer is to do a self-examination, or survey. When performing your skin survey, choose a particular day during the month and note it on the calendar. Evaluate each area of your skin, leaving no part unseen. After you look at all the easily seen areas, use a mirror to evaluate the genitals, the anal area, between the toes, your back, and any other hard to see area. It may be helpful to have an image of a body chart and check off areas as you check them on yourself, as well as make note of any moles or markings you find. You can find one of these online, For examining your scalp, enlist the help of a friend, partner, or spouse. Part your hair in small sections looking and feeling for erosions, scales, or discolored lesions. With the advent of tanning booths and full-body tans, you can end up with skin cancer on the vulva and penis. Take your skin survey seriously and leave no surface unexamined. The best way to adequately perform this survey is to know what each different kind of skin cancer looks like 2 Watch out for basal cell carcinoma. Basal cell carcinoma is the most common form of skin cancer. It is most often found in the sun-exposed areas of the head, including the ears and neck. It is erosive in nature, which means the local skin invasion of the cancer eats into the tissue it affects. It metastasizes, or spreads, to other sites on the body. Risk factors for this include sun exposure, tanning bed use,

Stay safe in the sun and you will have healthy skin and eyes for many years to come. 1 Protect against both forms of UV radiation. There are two known forms of ultraviolet light from the sun: ultraviolet A, which is a long-wave form of radiation, and ultraviolet B, which is a shortwave radiation. All types of ultraviolet radiation are invisible to the unaided eye but can do great damage to your skin and eyes over the course of a lifetime.[16] Both UVA and UVB are equally dangerous to humans. UVA radiation is more prevalent, but UVB radiation causes greater damage in smaller quantities. When you choose sunscreen or clothing with UV protection, it's important to make sure those products protect against both UVA and UVB (usually designated as "broad-spectrum" protection). 2 Understand how radiation affects the skin. Your skin shows the most direct effects of UV exposure over the course of a lifetime. If you spend a lot of time in the sun, there's a good chance that your skin will experience negative effects unless you take precautions to protect yourself against UV radiation.[17] Dry skin, blemishes, a loss of elasticity, and premature signs of aging are all common effects caused by UV exposure over long periods of time. Non-melanoma skin cancer (NMSC) includes squamous and basal cell carcinomas. NMSC is a serious form of cancer that is usually not fatal but can cause serious scars, damage, and disfigurement. NMSCs most commonly occur on parts of the body with high exposure to the sun, specifically the head, neck, and hands/arms. Melanoma is the most severe form of skin cancer,

how to recognize tanning and skin cancer|skin cancer bumps on face Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer but if you catch it early, it can be easy to treat. Skin cancer actually consists of a group of cancers that look and grow differently. Anyone who spends time in the sun is at risk for skin cancer, regardless of skin color or type. To recognize skin cancer, start by examining your body for any spots, moles, or bumps. Then, look closely at these spots for signs that they may be cancerous. Pay attention to any changes in your skin, and have them evaluated by a healthcare professional. You should speak to your doctor for an official diagnosis. 1 Allow your doctor to examine your body for spots. If you are concerned about certain spots on your body, make an appointment with your doctor. The doctor can then examine the spots more closely. They will look for moles, birthmarks, or spots that could be cancerous.[9] You will need to remove your clothing so the doctor can do the physical exam of your entire body, from head to toe. 2 Let the doctor run tests on any spots, moles, or bumps. The doctor may do a biopsy on any suspicious spots, moles, or bumps. They will take a small sample of the spot and bring it to a lab for testing.[10] The biopsy will allow the doctor to determine if cancerous cells are present, and if so, what type of cancer is present. 3 Get a diagnosis from the doctor. If the doctor confirms you have skin cancer, they will do more tests to determine the stage of the cancer. The doctor will then recommend treatment based on the stage of the cancer.[11] The main form of treatment for skin cancer is surgery to remove the cancerous spot or spots. In some cases where the cancer covers a wide area of your skin, you may also need radiotherapy or chemotherapy

How to tanning and skin cancer |melanoma treatment Skin cancer is best defined as the abnormal growth of skin cells, often due to too much sun exposure, but there are other factors to consider also.[1] There are three main types of skin cancer, which are named based on which layer of skin is affected: basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma and melanoma. Melanoma is the rarest form, but also the most deadly type because it's most likely to spread to other parts of the body. Checking your skin for unusual changes on a regular basis can help detect cancer in its early stages, which gives you the best chance of successful treatment. 1 Focus on skin most exposed to the sun. Although skin cancer can develop anywhere on the body, it's most likely to occur on areas with the most sun exposure.[2] It's the UV radiation in the sun that damages the DNA of skin cells and makes them mutate into cancer cells. Thus, spend more time checking parts of your body that get the most sun, such as your scalp, face (especially your nose), ears, neck, upper chest, forearms and hands. Look for unusual marks and blemishes on your skin, especially new growths (see below). It's obviously a good idea to not let certain areas get constant sun exposure, but some outdoor jobs make it difficult. If you can't always cover skin up, then apply a strong sunscreen that blocks out UV radiation. Women tend to be more susceptible to skin cancer on their legs and upper arms because they wear skirts, shorts and halter tops. Check your skin for unusual spots while you're naked (just prior to bathing, for example) so you can see as much of your skin as possible. Use a magnifying glass if your eyesight is poor. 2 Determine your risk factors. Some people are more susceptible to skin cancer than others because they have more risk factors. The main risk factors currently identified include: fair skin with freckles, red hair, over-exposure to UV radiation (from the sun or tanning beds), history of serious

How to Prevent Skin Cancer|ways to reduce skin cancer Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States. Over 3.5 million new cases of skin cancer are diagnosed annually, and more than 90% of these are directly related to too much sun or UV exposure;[1] however, the good news is that with preventative strategies, as well as with early detection and treatment of any worrisome skin lesions, you greatly increase your chances of preventing skin cancer. 1 Understand that most skin cancers are easily curable.[16] Even though the word "cancer" can strike fear in us the moment we hear it, skin cancer is actually one of the most curable forms of cancer. When caught early, it can oftentimes be removed with no long-term ramifications. The key to curability depends on both the specific type of skin cancer, as well as the time-frame in which it is noticed and excised by a physician. If the skin cancer is either a precursor lesion (a precancerous growth), a "squamous cell carcinoma," or a "basal cell carcinoma," it can most likely be removed and cured. These are types of cancers or pre-cancers that, when caught early, rarely cause long-term consequences. Melanoma, on the other hand, is the most dangerous form of skin cancer. Although it is the least common diagnosis, it is the leading cause of death from skin cancer, and the fastest one to metastasize (spread) to other areas of the body. Fortunately, with early identification, many melanomas can be noticed, excised, and effectively "cured" as well; however, the risk is certainly higher with this subtype and thus of greater concern. 2 Biopsy or excise any worrisome lesions.[17] When you see your doctor and show them your skin lesion, they will evaluate it and may recommend biopsying (taking a sample of) or excising (completely cutting out) any lesions that are potential cancers. If your doctor recommends a biopsy or excision, they will most likely send you to a medical specialist (a dermatologist, who specializ
